Challenge 56: The Great Divide

So I had lots of ideas but this is the one that kept recurring to me.

I want you to fanart something that shows a division. It can be either an emotional or physical divide between characters. Furthermore, I want to see a literal divide emphasized in your entries. However you want to go about that is completely open just so long as there an actual divide showcased in your art.

Short and sweet but that's pretty much it. Please free to ask any questions and go ahead and post your entries as you make them in new posts ('cause I like to see them as they come in! :D), should you do more than one.

Fandoms: whatever, open to all...explanations required for all entries.
Sizes: whatever, so long as it isn't an icon or anything.
Deadline: 20th February

Explanation:

Now, you may recognise the text from this piece... lol, when I did my challenge, I thought about the text myself and really wanted to make a piece based on my challenge, as the ideas behind the quote really inspired me. And so when I saw your challenge about the "great divide" I decided to incorporate the two ideas.

In this piece I wanted to show the division between happiness and meaning, and how the two actually merged together for Cordelia. On the left hand-side we have Cordelia bathed in the light, free from her visions, living a naive existence, living purely in the moment and living happily. However, this actually lead her back to her "real" life, a life of meaning, one where she must think about what has lead her to this moment, and one where she will constantly be thinking of the future with her visions intact. I wanted to show Cordelia's decision, where she realises that her real life, and her purpose in life is to bear the burden of the visions - and to do good with them. But I wanted to highlight the split between the two lives that she lead that brought her to this incredibly important decision - hence the divide. I think the division in the piece is pretty clear too. Light side - happiness, naivity, Dark side - real life, demonic presence, etc. etc.

I hope my ideas for this piece translated, it's not exactly how I envisioned it when I started, but I saved it none-the-less. I haven't been happy with much of my art lately - the muse is away right now!

Entry One: Exasperation

Forgive me, it's a Twilight entry (yeah, I think I said that more for myself than anyone else :lol: ). But when I was reading the challenge the other day, Edward and Rosalie just popped into my mind. Plus, I've always had a ton of fashion photography saved on my computer. I never use it much in my art because it's often hard for me to work with, and Rosalie gives me incentive to try to use it :D

Explanation
Some back story (with some big, irrelevant-to-the-piece holes): The Cullens are a tight knit group of good, human-preserving vampires (as in, they drink animal blood). They're like a big, happy vampire family. Carlisle turned Edward. Then he found/turned Esme and he luuurrrves her. And then he turned Rosalie - hoping that she and Edward would, like, totally fall in love or something to that effect. But they only ever responded to each other as siblings. (Rosalie has Emmett. I love them! And the books are actually about Edward and Bella. So...yeah.) Then Alice and Jasper found the Cullens and joined the family :)
Okay, now. So, the piece is about Edward and Rosalie. Because, like I said, the Cullens are a pretty close knit family. Yet, Edward and Rosalie seem to...not get along as well. Like, they don't really get each other and maybe they actually annoy each other. And I think Edward kind of shows he doesn't have the same fondness for her as he does for Esme or Alice. Though the books don't touch on the subject often, I was immediately intrigued by their relationship. (It helps that in some short moments, we do see Edward pissed off at Rose, and Rose mentioning how he bugs her.) It makes sense that they don't always get along. They're very different. He can read minds, and is pretty attuned to everyone around him. She is...the center of her own universe. (And I love her for it!) And still, they're similar in some superficial and some not-so-shallow ways.

I think the piece itself is pretty simple in concept. I just wanted to show the, well, "division" between Edward and Rosalie. I stuffed a bunch of stuff in between them, instead of having the bodies in my art closer together (as I usually do). And they're not in the same box (Ooh! They don't think in the same box...) The title came about because "Exasperation" looked prettier on the piece than irritation or annoyance or anything else I could think of. The text is a quote I lifted from one of the extra scenes from Meyer's site. (Having some E and/vs. R, from each of their POVs made me squeal with delight.) And I thought it fit. They're very different, some times at opposite ends, but they do have some giant similarities.
(Also, the Rosalie in my piece is Caroline Trentini. Not my usual Lily Donaldson. There wasn't some deliberate conceptual thing there. It's just that Caroline was more cooperative in this wall than Lily :p)

Entry one
I'd had this idea in my head about having a mirror representing two sides of a character for quite a while now, so your challenge gave me just the right push to actually do it! In the show Moonlight the protagonist (love that word hehe) Mick St.John is a very divided character. He hates being a vampire, he hates pretty much him self and his essence of being. However, instead of burying himself in his own misery and despair he helps people (especially Beth :xd). In this piece, I tried to show the pain and anger he feels inside (the mirror - here representing what he sees and not what everybody else sees ) and the cool front he shows to everybody around him. Also, the text I chose (Michael Jackson's Man in the Mirror) is meant to show how he's made the decision to help people instead of letting the anger and pain rule him.

Big old explanation...
When I first saw this challenge, I immediately thought of Buffy and Faith. I kind of think of them as two halves of the same person since they are both Slayers when there is only supposed to be one Slayer. Their relationship changed so much over the years from good to bad and back to good again. I used the mirror in this to show the same type of person that they are, yet they are different, so they are divided in that. I used lyrics from Pink Floyd's Division Bell album because it mainly focuses on communication breakdown, which I think can be shown in this wall.

Explanation
So lately one of my obsessions has been Tin Man. Well in Tin Man the two sisters, DG and Az, have a rift between them through out almost the entire thing. The possession of Az plays off jealousies and emotions, causing her to hate DG, and the wallpaper is about that

Entry one
Well I had loads of ideas running through my head which I will probably do later (hopefully :D) but this one stuck. I decided on the Nikki/Jessica divide, in the piece I tried to show Nikki being split into two personalities, Jessica- the strong one and Nikki- the weak one. I really wanted to find the right image to try show the two sides thats why I split the main image in half to show the different personalities in the one body .. I hope you all get what I mean because I am rubbish at explaining my self :s

Explanation...

I'm a big fan of Sam and Jess and considering Jess got a whole say, five minutes of screen time before they torched her, I figured I'd just make a manip about their relationship. It's pretty obvious throughout the whole show that Jess was the one for Sam and despite her never being brought up anymore, her memory would probably still linger in his character's mind. I thought I would show her memory through the multiple photos in this manipulation, while leaving Sam in the corner unable to cope with looking back at her.

Man it took me AGES to think of something for this. Finally decided to do one on the episode Empty Places where everyone (with the exception of Spike) gangs up on Buffy and calls her leadership into question. This puts a real divide between the group with the potentials/dawn/scooby gang on one side and Buffy/Spike on the other. Decided to focus on the scene where they tell her that they are fed up with her/her plans and her manner and Dawn tells her to get out. She isn't a part of it anymore. Put the empty space between them to hopefully show the divide between them all!

So I decided to touch on the obvious divide happening between Buffy and her friends during this season, and especially this episode. This scene shows how much different she feels than them, and Spike uses the opportunity to let her know just how different. I tried to create a divide by grouping her friends all on the same side and her on the other, and leaving her and Spike obviously darker than the rest of the images.

Entry One: Nightmare

I haven't entered a challenge in so long, but the most recent episodes of Supernatural have just inspired me with their dark humor and dark, chilling, suspenseful drama. Is there a reason I shouldn't love this show to giggles and bits? Alas, I wanted to show the scene in 'Dream A Little Dream Of Me' where Dean is confronted by himself and tells "himself" everything that Dean fears when he looks in the mirror, essentially. The division I wanted to show is Dean's denial and Dean's nobility and protectiveness for Sam by NOT showing this part of him, not showing Sam what's really going on inside (the issues with their dad, his very real fear of going to Hell and dying soon, etc), this part that he sees every time he looks in the mirror and is ashamed of, the parts that he hates about himself, as well as the parts that he fears in himself. I used a large black gap/crack down the middle, with the "evil" Dean from his dream on the left and our Dean on the right. I especially like the cap that I used of him looking, and how scared he looks at the idea of confronting this part of himself, in contrast with the "evil" Dean looking calm and sure.

Of course, this is just the tip of the iceberg with that scene, and I don't think I explained it as well as I could have. I'm just happy I got to enter in time. :P
