Brian, that cover looks *amazing*. Especially Gunn, in human face, still looking really, really evil. It's like ConduitGunn from "A Hole in the World"/"Shells".
I don't know if you hear this a lot or not, but I always, always wished they'd used Gwen again on TV, and seeing her back has been one of my favorite things about "After the Fall", and seeing two covers now in which she looks like a complete badass is just so cool.
This cover is the first one since the Jo Chen TPB cover for "The Long Way Home" that makes me want to go get it signed by the artist and the actors. Does Betta George do signings at conventions at all?

Oh thats excellent! I love the very realistic rendering of dear old Betta George, and *g* I notice they've used the same promo photo that I did for my mock cover. It's one of the few that fit in with this take on Wes.
I love the portrait of Gunn too. Very dynamic. :D

See, I really love how Gwen has been drawn on this cover. I agree with KingofCretins: I wish she had been used more on the show and am very glad she's in the comics. And this cover does her character a lot of justice - it looks just like Ms. Davalos and it pretty much sums the character up into one drawing. I'm very impressed.
Though I'm also very confused: How does this "First Night" thing work? Is it like...a story-arc within "After the Fall," much like Buffy Season 8 has story arcs within it (IE: "The Long Way Home" and "No Future For You")? Or is it something else?

It's not the same image at all, but Gwen on that cover reminds me of one of my favorite shots of her. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a screencap. But in "Long Day's Journey" when the Beast kills her client in front of her and sends her flying, she comes up tearing off her glove and this charge of electricity runs over her hand. That is one of my favorite moments of her.

Gorgeous cover! Easily the best one so far. The likenesses are spot on!
Great cover. Stand-outs: Wesley looks more like Alexis Denisof than any other rendition of him I've seen in comic form so far, and Betta George is cooler than ever. Who's the artist?
By the way, Brian: I was away on vacation when you posted that "Hi all!" thread, so... a very big, very belated welcome to our forum. :)

That's bloody weird you said that. My friend and I were watching that very episode just the other day and I commented on how cool and awesome she looked as she got up and tore he glove off. It's always been on of my favourite moments. Great minds King :D
And the cover is awesome, Gunn looks brilliant in it. I'm dying to find out how everything came to be. :)

Count me in the Gwen fan club. I really like her, so I was delighted that she's included in "After the Fall". Nina too. If the Faith series or any other spin-off had gone ahead, I'd have serious started a movement to get them on there in some capacity. Especially Gwen, cause seriously, Gwen and Faith together would be sheer, 100% proof awesomeness.
The cover is brilliant. Fantastic likenesses.
I love this cover, the characters look exactly like the actors who played them. And Gunn is still scarless, I'm very excited to read the issues about the first night.

Well - this makes me #4 for the Gwen Club!! :D
It has been great to have Gwen in ATF. She really didn't get the exposure she should have had in the series. Always thought she and Angel would have been GREAT together! That little "electric kiss" she gave him - WOW!

I'm a bit confused about this as well...
Who is the artist for the cover?? This doesn't look like and Uru cover... More like a Tony Harris cover...
Whoah, that is an intriguing picture. Now I'm going to have to buy the series so I can find out what's happenning. I really liked that electro-chick and what's with the cool siamese fighting fish? :)

You really need to buy the books!!
And, thank thank thank you Brian Lynch for posting that link here! The art is absolutely amazing.
Before Buffy's season 8 came out, I'd never bought a comic before. I just never had a reason to. I figured that one day I'd finish all the Buffy novels and I'd have to move on to the non-canon comics but I'm glad that I was able to start fresh with a continuation of the series.
I have just been blown away by the story-telling and the art in both series. I'm so impressed and kinda kicking myself for never picking up a comic before now.
Thanks for this and the wonderful work you (and the others) have been doing. I speak for myself but I'm sure other fans will agree, we waited a long time for this but it was well worth the wait.
It's a bigger version of the first peak.

Thanks for that, hadn't seen it yet. Wonder who the little white'd out person is. The only character I can think of that's that small would be Sid:s
vampmogs

I hope it isn't Sid!
They're some very nice preview pics, the drawings are great. Looks like we might see the moment where Wes is told he has to work for Wolfram and Hart. And I'd love to know what all the Connor stuff is about, I'm guessing it'll be a link with the first time Angel saw Connor and fell in love with him- and going to Wolfram and Hart to give Connor the life he deserved.
I have no idea who the white'd person is. I hope it's not a puppet, Sid was fun .. for one episode, the same for puppet Angel. (But 'Stupid plastic piece of crap!' is still a great line.)
The fact that it's a spoiler would indicate that we already know the person. I'm just curious if he/she is really little, or just little on the cover. It's the first night, who will be there the first night.

Read that First Night is a story arc about the the infamous - Night In The Ally from Not Fade Away.
We finally get to know what REALLY happened in the alley that night - as in - we finally get to know who turned Gunn.

Looks like Cordy to me. The hair, the low cut shirt, the jacket -- it's almost perfect for Season 3 Cordy, which is really the last time we *saw* Cordy.
Looks like Cordelia to me, too. Damn, Joss and Brian are taking great pains to rile the 'shippers up, aren't they?
mmm, I don't know yet. Cordy is dead and I'm not sure how she could be there the first night already. But if it's written well, I'm happy to see Cordelia back.
KingofCretins
30-01-08, 06:43 PM
Which is a huge part of their genius, frankly :)
Can you imagine what will happen on the Dark Horse thread? They've been revelling in the Issue #3 thing for two weeks, and then they find out that she's coming back? Heh.
Seriously, I hope it is Cordy, and not just to screw with 'shippers. Hers is pretty much the most sad and unjust story in the Buffyverse, and I would love the idea that the Powers said "dammit, he didn't listen, he never listens" and sent her back to continue to pull Angel along in the right direction.
Oh I would love to see Cordelia back, only if she was there the first night ... where is she *now*.
KingofCretins
30-01-08, 06:47 PM
It's a cover, Betta George probably wasn't there the first night either. "First Night" isn't exclusively the story from the alley, it's just where everybody was at that point.
Now, by the clothing, it could be Eve (http://www.screencap-paradise.com/caps/displayimage.php?pid=112160&fullsize=1), since it's a very similar outfit. But, the hair is all wrong, very Cordy-ish, and even at a distance, that looks more like Charisma's figure than Sarah Thompson's... taller, longer legs, curvier.
Oh I didn't know that. Wow, I really want to read that issue.:)
I was looking for promo pictures since those are used for at least Angel and Wesley.

Ooh- I really hope it's Cordy. I thought of her the second I saw it; she seems like the most obvious choice to me. Eve's hair is much flatter than Cordy's- the figure's hair is poofy.
And who better to bring Angel out of his funk than Cordy? Shippy things aside, Cordy is honestly Angel's best friend. If anyone can do it, she can. Plus, I don't think it'd be cheating death, really- Cordy specifically says, "I'll be seeing you"- I always got the impression that she was more moving on to another plane than all-out death. Her return is more plausible to me than 'my soul was completely destroyed and I'm gone forever' Fred.
So excited.
Edit: Didn't it say somewhere that Lorne will have an 'unlikely ally'? Wherever he is? This could be Cordelia. Although, it depends on how you interpret the 'unlikely'. It's unlikely because everyone thinks Cordy's dead, but it's not like she and Lorne are enemies.

I thought it was Eve, then I thought it might be Darla. Why didn't Cordy even cross my mind? I really, really hope it is though. I'll completely flip out.
Having said that, after getting all excited, if it turns out not to be her I'll flip out anyway. Awful rage-induced kind of flipping.
The wait for both these comics is killing me now.
KingofCretins
30-01-08, 07:34 PM
Unlikely ally would still keep Eve in play since he, y'know, loathes Eve. But I"m still hoping for Cordy. She, as a character, deserved so much more than the deal she got. Even Fred had a much better deal -- and she knew it, laying there in bed with the whole gang standing there, trying to save her. Cordy was basically kidnapped from the planet, then kidnapped from her body, then forgotten in a coma, and then died off screen. She totally deserves to come back, even if it's in quasi-Darla like form from "Inside Out".
The more I look at that, the more it looks like Cordy.

She doesn't look skinny enough to be Eve..thank god.
I think she looks more 'voluptuous' then that.

30-01-08, 08:48 PM

I think we absolutely need an Eve story in "First Night" to cap off the whole "Go where?" thing. Plus... she's awesome.

Cordelia, I mean just look at these promo shots:

I am pretty frakin glad that it is here too. Also why would it be such a spoiler if it were Eve? It's gotta be Cordy. Even though it is a real longshot I am hoping for some more Cangel lovin. Also, I hope that we will find out whether or not she is still around.

I love that promo picture... and I really hope it's Cordy. If it's Eve, that's pretty cool, too, but I *really* hope it's Cordy.
*Spoilers because it references another piece of comic art on that previous link and because she's talking about the other spoilers, too*
There's another piece of art from the comics up on that link that was previously posted (where we first saw the whole cover for "First Night") and the cover has Spike, Connor, Gunn, Gwen, the Dragon, Lorne, and a man holding a gun (possibly two, based on both his arms being outstretched).
To me? It looks an awful lot like Lindsay. Which could be who that mysterious person we thought was Groo really is on that group shot cover.
This leads me to think that it MIGHT be Eve on the cover and not Cordy. But you never know. I brightened the picture to see better and whoever it is has the same hair style as season3!Cordy and the same clothes and stance (just mirrored) as in that season 1 promo picture posted before.
So I dunno.
Whoever it is, it certainly has me greatly intrigued!
EDIT! I just saw LaJaula's post.
Didn't it say somewhere that Lorne will have an 'unlikely ally'? Wherever he is? This could be Cordelia. Although, it depends on how you interpret the 'unlikely'. It's unlikely because everyone thinks Cordy's dead, but it's not like she and Lorne are enemies.
Now I'm thinking that it's gonna be Eve. Look at it from a writer's perspective: there is a lot of possible drama to come from Eve working with Lorne. First of all: He hates her so it'd be a very interesting dynamic there. Second of all: He killed Lindsay, the man she loves. When she finds that out? She'll probably be just as pissed as Dark!Willow, but without all the veins (or maybe she WILL have the veins...).
It could be really awesome if it's Eve.
Though I do hope that it's Cordy, simply to give her a better ending.
OkinawanSteel
30-01-08, 11:02 PM
If it's Eve, would it really need whiting out though? It's not that big of a spoiler. Eve working with Lorne certainly would be interesting, but nothing she could ever do would trump a Cordy return.
KingofCretins
31-01-08, 02:24 AM
I made a point similar to Okinawan's on Whedonesque -- we got Lorne being back for free, so why would Eve being back be such a big deal that they have to spoiler the cover art?
Eve would be a good candidate for stories, but I disagree with Pat that she's essential in any way. She was cool in Season 5, but hardly compelling. In fact, they ended up being less interesting the more they revealed.
The only thing Brian Lynch has given us is that it's definitely not Buffy. I'm not sure what serious speculation would have thought it was, but at least that's off the table. I sometimes think he may be a little *too* intense about what is and isn't a 'spoiler' -- I wouldn't consider this a 'spoiler', to confirm the identity of this woman after the image has already been released.
Heather sums it up perfectly, it could be a really cool story with Eve, but it would be a fantastic one with Cordelia. "Angel" is a series with a lot of entertaining female one-offs and recurring characters, though, and if Brian Lynch wanted, he could reach back and grab Bethany Chaulk out of "Untouched" and that would be great, too.
Are we suppost to be doing spoiler tags still?
honestly to me it looks like someone with Blonde hair.. which immediately lead me to think (and hope!!) Buffy.. but what are the odds of that, so whatever. Yes I'm a little bitter :p
Didn't think Cordy for 1 second.. last time we saw her she wasn't blonde or quite that skinny... but who knows. Whoever it is they have to important to torture us with blacked out images.

31-01-08, 08:20 AM
I'm not sure we should just automatically assume that it is Cordelia. Didn't Lynch say he didn't want this coming out over on Whedoneqsue because he didn't want people being disapointed if it wasn't who they wanted. So far.. everyone wants Cordy, which could be exactly what he expected.
If it is Cordelia, I hope it turns out good. I never wanted her to die, but she did, and her last scene was just pure awesomeness, I hope it isn't ruined by bringing her back. It's why I never wanted Tara back, or Anya back, or Jenny back.
And sorry Cangels, but I don't think we'll be getting much shippiness. Didn't Lynch also state that romance wouldn't be a focus really in 'After the Fall'? Personally, I think shipping should be the last thing on people's mind here.
I was thinking who it could be,
Cordelia --> already talked about enough.
Lilah --> I don't think that lilah would wear those clothes.
Eve --> Maybe, but why was she white'd? It wouldn't be a big suprise.
Darla --> Look the most like that little figure, but she died and came back many times. I think it's done with Darla.
Drusilla --> Nah, the looks don't match.
Anne --> Again, why would she be white'd, not a big suprise.
Buffy --> Already confirmed that it isn't Buffy.
Nina --> No reason for spoiler warnings at all.
Kate --> Maybe, it would be a suprise and she didn't die or something.
Faith --> I don't think so, I don't think she left Cleveland. Besides, she became a real BtVS character.
I think it's Cordelia, Kate or maybe Eve.
OkinawanSteel
31-01-08, 02:09 PM
I thought Faith to still be in England with Giles. Either that or she returned to Cleveland with Giles in tow. I really hope they give us a reason why none of the BtVS characters seem to know that LA went to Hell.
Cordy and Eve seem the most likely candidates from everything we've seen/heard. If it's Eve though, it's not a very good likeness.
Since the image has been leaked, any chance of Lynch confirming who it is before we all get so carried away?
Brian said he won't be giving out spoilers. The only thing he confirmed is that it's not Buffy.

Looks like Kate to me, the way she has her hand on her hip. Like keeping it close to her gun or something?
I originally assumed it was Cordelia as well, but after someone mentioned Kate I zoomed in a bit more and had another look and I'm beginning to think that it could be her. She would certainly fit the description of an unlikely ally, considering we haven't seen her for three seasons. Also if you look at her left hand you can see her holding what looks like a pistol by her side, definitely the trademark weapon of Kate. :)
I've included a cropped and lightened image of her from the cover that makes the gun stand out more.
Looks like it's definitely Kate to me.
http://www.harrythevampireslayer.com/angel_support/rohm.jpg
I start believing that's Kate, I still think that the figure looks like Darla. But I'm almost sure that they don't bring her back ... and Kate looks more like Darla as Eve or Cordelia. And on the posted photo of Kate, she wears almost the same clothes.
But *yeeh*, I liked Kate. Okay, it's not Cordy but Kate is also a great character.
OkinawanSteel
01-02-08, 12:12 PM
Yeah, I'm starting to believe it's Kate too, but again, she's not a character that would warrant being whited out from my point of view. I guess Lynch could just be being extremely secretive, but then again, he did spoil Lorne for free.
Bugger. I really want Cordy. :(
EndersWrath
01-02-08, 06:37 PM
I'm 99.99% sure that it isn't Kate. The ONLY thing that would resemble her is the hair...sorta. That isn't a pistol, its just weirdness from blowing up the pic.
Plus, when has Kate EVER been that seducting looking? Definitely a Cordy pose.

I don't know... the gun thing is starting to convince me. I'm not completely convinced that's a gun, but it does look like one, and if it is, it's almost gotta be Kate.
And, man, Elisabeth Rohm is a very sexy woman. Go rewatch "Lonely Hearts". I don't have a problem believing that's her.
Right now, I'm about 50/50 between Cordelia and Kate. Well, 40/40, with 5 each for Eve and Anne.

the only characters that would wear that outfit are cordelia and darla. that figure looks brunette, so i'm going with cordelia.
not a gigantic saint-cordy fan.
and darla can NEVER come back too many times. lol.
Yeah I'm not a huge Saint Cordy fan either :p Loved her up until season 3.. when she sort of lost her edge for me. Which was sad. But I'd still prefer Cordy over Kate.. not sure what the big spoiler would be with Kate.. what can she do in Hell?

You know... If *someone* will just go back and put *SPOILERS* in the title of the thread - we wouldn't have to talk in SPOILERS. So much easier to do that than this... Then you just enter at your own risk of being spoiled. You were warned!
(I think that should go in the Special Hell thread!! j/k LOL! :D)
Anyhoo...
Yeah I thought that as well...the perso seems to have blond hair. I couldn't remember anyone Lynch or Whedon that has short, curly, blond hair... But I wouldn't think it would be Buffy. There's been enough said from Whedon that the Slayers had no part in the Alley Fight.
Cordy - it could be Cordy and the Spuffy within me would not object:D (Go Cangel!) LOL!! And it would just make sense for her to be an AHD anyway. Wesley's there.
I don't think it's Cordy.I think it's Kate. And if it is Cordy,I don't think shippers, whether Spuffy or Cangle shippers, should be rejoicing since Brian Lynch already said romance is not really part of the story of After The Fall.Plus if it is Cordy, her return probably would brief and not a full return to life.Honestly to me,if they brought Cordy back then it would totally cheapen her death and the episode,"You're Welcome and would be the thing that would finally make death cheap in the verse. Why bother killing anyone or caring when a character is killed since they'll probably be brought back anyway. It's been done too often now iMO and Cordy's return would be the final straw I think.

OOOooooo... That would be so awesome!!!! I saw Elizabeth Rohm at Dragon*Con and FX Intnl. Her character was really great!! And she wasn't "killed off" the series - so it's a possibility!! LOL!! Poor Angel!! All his Ex's in one place - boy - he really is in Hell if Buffy shows up!
Kate isn't really an ex, there were a few early episodes were a possible relationship was hinted at. But once she found out what he was and about the darkness that existed around her she never really trusted him enough for them to form any kind of relationship.
This was especially so after her Dad was killed by Vampires, even though he was corrupt.

Not sure if we are doing spoilers still - so...
I still think it`s Kate, that would make for some good dynamics - and currently she might be the only one besides Connor who doesn`t blame Angel for everything... He sure could use an ally. I also do not want it to be Cordelia, I would much rather characters who die stay dead. I feel it cheapens it a lot if that were the case.

aww... poor wes and fred.
Love the new art. I've grown to like Urru mostly, but this is very clear, so you know you're not missing important details. The only issue for me is that Wesely is in his promo outfit, which tends to take me away from the story.. I'm thinking 'why is he wearing the outfit he wore for the promo shots... and why do i care?' :p Wonder where they are...
This made me sad. I know that every relationship in the 'verse will fail .. but this one was extremely unfair. After three years finally a week or 2 together ... and this is not real obviously.
Beautiful drawings btw. I never had trouble with Urru like some others but this is really pretty.

He's dressed like that partly to humiliate him by Wolfram and Hart, and partly because he's now a WRH rep, and has to look the part, just like previous reps did, such as Hamilton.

Hey guys
New preview pages for the Angel first night series
http://ryalltime.blogspot.com/2008/02/first-and-second-nights.html
General thoughts;
Lorne doesn't seem to happy with what's been going on. It's all very symbolic imagery mostly, with Illyria rising from Fred's grave, the Grosslar demon wearing the baby big, Angel looking very devious with his list of plans, and Lorne looks pretty rattled about killing Lindsey. I think the most interesting are definitely the shot of Angel, because he looks rather devious, which IMO shows how Lorne views the guy. And Lorne looking pretty traumatised about what he did to Lindsey. Though I hope this doesn't turn into another character blaming everything on Angel, Lorne didn't have to kill Lindsey he could have just walked away, he's to blame just as much.
I was also pretty surprised that Lorne had a problem with them making deals with the Grosslar. Gunn states the negotiations were to have them stop eating baby heads, which is a pretty positive thing. And out of everyone there, Lorne was the one wanting Angel to mingle with Sebasis and the other demons.
The Spike pages are pretty interesting. The way I see it, he's watching as LA slowly gets taken over to hell, you can see some tentacles starting to go over the buildings but it isn't the fiery wreck LA is now. What's more interesting is that he begins to laugh, wtf? I'm at a loss why. I have no idea why Spike would be happy about this, unless he’s laughing at his own stupidity for joining the plan perhaps?
I thought that I already posted these yesterday ... BF eated my post. :p
Anyway,
I think that it's great that they made Lorne hate the plan. I love that one of the team sees the bad things. Of course the whole team sees the bad points, but the fact that Lorne was against it from the start is fresh. There is no way that the writers excuse Angel for his stupid plans and that's a good thing. And 'neat plans' cracked me up.
Spike's smile freaks me out a little ...
edit:
Oh, BF lost a lot of posts yesterday.
Looks like an ironic smile to me. As in, "Yeah, we changed the world all right." I've said this in other forums, but I fangirl that page. Love what Messina does with Spike's hair and cheekbones, in particular.
I was thinking that he smiled because he could feel the sun on his face. But I don't know, I have trouble reading faces in comics.

Lol I wondered why it hadn't been posted yet!

I think Lorne is kinda worse because of that. He didn't agree with the plan but did it anyway, not great.

I agree, that's how I'm seeing it too. I really don't know how Spike could be smiling that LA is going to hell unless it was something like this.

I think the first panel, where Spike looks depressed and horrified, makes Spike's smile ironic. He's laughing because, really, what else can he do? His teeth look clenched to me, like it's a forced smile. And for some reason, I think that if there were a fourth panel, Spike would have dropped his head down-- anyone else see this, or is it just me?
My problem with Spike's smile in the third panel, is that it doesn't feel negative ... it looks peaceful ... kind of. But like I already said, I'm not good with comics.

Might I just say, though, that the art in the Wesley and Spike pages we've seen so far is absolutely amazing! Oh, how I wish that all of "After the Fall" was the same. The coloring is perfect and the likenesses are uncanny (for the most part). You can clearly tell who is who. It's...amazing. I like the art for "First Night" more than I do for Buffy Season 8.
