Challenge 52: A Life of Meaning

First of all, I hope that everyone has had an awesome Christmas, and now that it's over I'm hoping that the holiday-art-slow-down is coming to an end, since this is my second challenge, *grins*.

This challenge is based on a quote from Heroes that I always found very provoking and inspiring. It's from the season one episode "Parasite", and I hope that you find it just as provoking and allow it to help you create some awesome pieces of art. The quote is below:

"You see, I think there comes a time when a man has to ask himself whether he wants a life of happiness or a life of meaning...
...Two very different paths. I mean, to be truly happy a man must live absolutely in the present, and with no thought of what's gone before, and no thought of what lies ahead. But a life of meaning, a man is condemned to wallow in the past, and obsess about the future."

I loved the idea of this black and white view that Linderman had of living one life or another and not being able to integrate the two, he separated the idea of happiness and meaning, and I always wondered, looking at characters from different series and the paths that they have taken if they have found a way to live both happily and have a life of meaning.

But this quote can be analyzed and taken in different meanings; perhaps using it to show someone making a decision to do what is right, and not what makes them happy, or vice versa. It could also be taken to show how someone lives their life, a character piece demonstrating their actions and what their life is summed up as: meaningful or happy, or perhaps both.

You are not required to use this quote in your art, it is merely a starting point to try and see how other people interpret this idea and concept into their art. I feel there are multiple ways that this can be done, and I'm sure some artists will come up with ideas from this quote that I haven't even thought of yet, so it's going to be interesting to see how it has inspired you, if it does.

Now, on with the rules:

Size: The regular wallpaper sizes: 800x600 or 1024x768 etc, or a wallscroll.
Entries: As many as you like and post them as you do them, they don't all need to be in one post.
Fandoms: I'm going to try and stick to TV series that I know quite well so Angel, BtVS, Charmed, Chuck, Dark Angel, Firefly, Ghost Whisperer, Gilmore Girls, Grey's Anatomy, Heroes, Lost, Moonlight, Point Pleasant, Psych, Supernatural, Tru Calling and Veronica Mars, Wonderfalls. (I have watched all episodes to date so feel free to use them in your entries, just be sure to stick them in spoiler tags in case others haven't watched them yet!)
Deadline: 4 weeks, 23rd January 2008

If there are any other series you would like to use please PM me first. And I'll love you forever if you do Dark Angel or Moonlight, heh, I'm trying to spread the love.

Good luck to everyone, and I can't wait to see how the challenge goes!

Ooh first to post!!

I started this before this challenge started and didn't actually intend to make it for this one, but for the emotions challenge. The ideas behind this were definately more attuned to this challenge so I'm entering it into this one instead - that's never happened to me before so I hope that's ok.

Explanation

The idea behind this piece is to show Angel at different stages in his progress from S1 on BtVS to how he viewed himself in the later seasons of AtS. The right handed image is him looking away and unsure of his path (S1 BtVS and before) In the middle image, he is looking out at you but is wary and untrustful (S1 of AtS after losing Buffy and later in the season his ties to humanity - Doyle and nearly Cordy and Wes). The main and left handed image shows him not exactly ****y, but much more confident (S3-4 AtS with the birth of Connor and the love of Cordelia).

The images are going from faded to clear to illustrate his becoming more a part of the human world rather than living on the outskirts of it. The words are there to demonstrate that more than anything Angel wanted to be a good man and his happiness was unimportant to that goal - he definately chose the path of a life of meaning rather than a life of happiness.

(That may actually be the longest explanation I've given to a piece of art!)

Darling, you ask and I give ;) hehe...

I thought that Max was a perfect example of someone who took meaning over happiness. How she and Logan never really got to be together, how she stopped having a "normal" life once Logan recruited her (or whatever you could say he did...). I tried to show this by having sort of sad images in the background (Logan walking away etc.) and her sort of tough image in the foreground. Can't say I have intense fluffy puppy feelings about the piece though ^^

EDIT
Entry two
I know it's an old show, but still... End of season one Dark Angel spoilers
Well, I started thinking about this challenge and there's this scene in Dark Angel that I've wanted to art since I watched it the first time and it's when Zach scarifices himself. It's such a powerful and (in some wierd way) beautiful scene. Although, if I woke up and found out one of my brothers had done the same as he for me, I don't know how I'd be able to live with myself :s So, how does this fit into your challenge? Well, the way I see it Zach has a choise: either he lives (and I guess that's the "happy" part...) or he sacrifices himself and Max lives (the "meaningful" part, meaning ful for Max and the people who love her that would be...). Zach chooses meaningful (as i'm sure you know).

I was kind of freaking that I wouldn't find any inspiration for this challenge, but I'm going through the first season of Heroes again, and the quote reminded me of 'Homecoming', when Peter is talking to Ando. The way I interpreted the quote on this one is that Peter is the kind of guy that does whatever he can for someone else, regardless of his own sacrifices. It's in his blood, his heart, his spirit, to be a selfless person. Along with this, he has faith. Hope and faith that the world can be saved. To be simple, his entire life is about meaning, knowing the past and obsessing about the future, what it could be, what it will be (i.e. destiny, etc) as well as his role in said future. In this scene, he goes to save the cheerleader, knowing that it will result in his death and at the same time not knowing whether or not he will succeed, but he has to try, sacrificing his life, his happiness, for meaning. I don't know if that made sense, it did in my head. I'm not sure I got the idea of this across, I think I should have added in a Claire cap, but then it would be crowded off the wazoo, so I'm hoping the text kind of helps out with the clarification. :D

Super challenge:2party:

ENTRY ONE

I thought Buffy was a perfect example of a life of meaning. As she was chosen to fight vampires, demons etc and be the slayer, she never got to have a choice of a life of happiness, although she tried her hardest to have one. She always had to sacrifice her own happiness for sake of saving the world etc. Being the slayer gave her life meaning, a purpose. Just decided to do a simple character piece as my brain is a bit frazzled at the mo and I soo wanted to enter this:)

Entry One: The BuffyBot

This was a machine that was created for pleasure and for a desperate need for love on the makers side (or orderer of the machine). When Buffy died the machine was called in as a slayer and it took this calling on a most serious level, fighting all the way into her destruction. She took up the mantle of Slayerhood after Buffy and even though she was programmed for this it was still a life of meaning. She was there for Dawn and she helped her find Buffy again. She kept Sunnydale safe for months together with the gang and she was the safety for Dawn to not be taken away from the scoobies.

Machine or not, her life was of meaning and she was a soldier of good.

Entry One: Outsiders

Well, I thought the lyrics kinda fitted perfectly for this challange. They have chosen a life of meaning, and as a consequence they are outsiders (freaks). Allthough I see nothing wrong with that^^. And blah I have no better explanation.

Dean has kind of chosen the life he lives, a life of meaning, hunting. That life forces them both to live a life on the roads, but still he is quite good at combine it, in a way he choses to.

Explanation
Angela is a very free-spirited artist who does facial reconstructions from partial skulls. In this episode a small boy is killed and it effects everyone in the team, but Angela mostly. She doubts whether she should do the job, as her art is her calling, not the science - the reason for the others being there. In this scene her boss gives her the exact words to make her realise that she is doing the right thing. She chooses a life dedicated to catching murderers rather than a party-girl lifestyle

Here's something from Prophecy Girl. It's where Buffy decides to be a slayer again if you like. She previously quit, and then comes back to tell Giles that she's going to face the master. I guess I saw it as when she made the choice to really lead the life of the slayer, and understanding what that really meant.

Choice.

I haven't been inspired in a while, but this challenge inspired me :D
I chose to do the moment in SPN: 2.20 WIaWSNB, when Dean is talking to his father's grave. There; Dean makes the decision between a life of meaning and a life of happiness. Either he goes back to saving people, or he stays to be with his family.
He chooses to walk away from happiness back to his life of meaning, even though he finds it unfair that he can't have both.

...I hope it came out in the wall, lol...

It Just Fell Apart
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v710/deedeebobo/wallpaper303.jpg

This is about how in s4, Buffy is determined that it IS one or the other. Happiness and slayerwork cannot go together because she's been there and done that.

So, this quote made me think of sacrifice. Sacrifice for the sake of others. I thought of Charlie from Lost and how his concern for Claire and Aaron and how Desmond's constant reminder of his impending peril made him feel. And ultimately, Charlie chose to fulfill his predetermined mission in order to save Claire and Aaron and other Losties. He became somewhat content with what had to be done....that his destiny, his death, would bring hope and safety to his friends. His life became meaningful in his death.

Angel in the episode I Will Remember You is, for me, another example of a life of meaning over happiness. After he is made human by the Mohra demon's blood, it means that he and Buffy can have the kind of life they have always wanted, without that pesky soul getting in the way. Angel soon realises that he can't fight/protect Buffy or humanity as a human. After the Mohra demon tells him that the end of days will come, he goes to the oracles and learns that this is true and Buffy will die. He realises that he can't let that happen and ask the oracles to make him as he once was, thereby throwing away any chane of a life of happiness with Buffy. Well that was a long winded explanation:D

Entry three
I just had to get an entry I actually liked in before the chellenge ended ;)

End of season 2 (Supernatural) spoilery...
I was sitting on the bus the other day thinking about numbers (I know, I'm that wierd) and the number 8 popped into mind. Besides representing "eight" it's also the sign for eternity. A bond that truly is eternal is the bond of family and brothers, naturally I thought of Supernatural :) In this piece I tried to convey Dean's never ending struggle to save Sam from danger and his pain when he finally fails. Now, how does this fit into the challenge? In more than one way, Dean thinks that his life's purpouse is to look after Sam, it's what he's always done. So when Sam dies in Dean's arms, Dean has failed his purpouse, his meaning in life. So then, he goes and strikes a deal with a devil, giving up his life and possible happiness for that of Sam. And in this piece, I've tried to show some of the emotions that leads up to that decision and how in a way, it was all orchestrated by the YE-demon.

Great challenge idea!!! Immediately inspiring, but I wanted to do three pieces and post them together so it took me a while. Plus a chance to do Moonlight art! :D Though as I'm posting these, I FINALLY found a high res screen cap site. :p

I have never agreed with this type sentiment in the first line where megalomaniacs confuse insatiable desire with purpose. But the rest of the quote was well worth exploring, I mean, to be truly happy a man must live absolutely in the present, and with no thought of what's gone before, and no thought of what lies ahead. But a life of meaning, a man is condemned to wallow in the past, and obsess about the future.

I wanted to depict Mick's relationships as determined by the past, present, and future. Caution: rambling ahead. Not to mention spoilery if you haven't seen the show. ;)

This is where it all starts. The past is haunted with his recklessness for Coraline when his desire consumes all. In the present we see Mick lamenting his vampirism and searching for a cure. Without pursuing Coraline in this moment, he'd most likely have never been turned.

The present is only truly happy with Beth in the briefest of moments when she impulsively kisses him before quickly running away. The moment is so free of any desires or obligations that it seems to last forever as we see him go through a range of emotions reliving the kiss over and over. He'd been so nervous about Beth that when he finally let go of his desires and the regrets of the desert that the universe saw fit to bring him this moment of happiness

The bright future he wishes with Beth may be ruined because he cannot get over his fever of Coraline and still lusts for her even believing she's Morgan. His obsession to puzzle out Morgan and her humanity lures him into this betrayal of Beth. So as long as he remains obsessed with his past with Coraline he has no chance of moving forward with Beth.

It's a piece I made a while ago.
I hope this fits, it's about Buffy's path during Empty Places/Touched/End of Days/Chosen. How she takes decisions to win the last battle.
The lyrics are from a french song, here's the basic translation:
When The Eternity...

Like an illusion passing through
An ephemeral star
Just leaving some traces
Of a transit on earth
A bit of us
Even if everything goes
Knowing that at the end
Nothing ends

When the eternity...
Change our endless lives
In love that always last
When The eternity...
Will come quietly
I'll follow you
Where nothing dies

Like the sky passing by
Time come unleash us
If the future erases us
Our dreams are lighting us
When everywhere
We'll forget
Knowing that everything
Will survives us

When the eternity...
Change our endless lives
In love that always last
When The eternity...
In the infinite
I promess you
That nothing really dies.

Challenge 52: A Life of Meaning Awards

Hey guys, I want to thank everyone who took part in this challenge, I know it's been a slow couple of months on the art-front, but I'm glad that I managed to inspire a few of you to enter! So with that in mind I would like to give you guys this little award for participating! Thanks!!!

My next set of awards, aren't awards as such, more... tokens of appreciation to a couple of people who really made my day! Yes, if you didn't guess, I've put together a couple of little "Thank You" awards to the two artists who made my wishes come true with some art for two fantastic shows that just don't have enough art out there - Dark Angel & Moonlight. So thanks to Ehlwyen & Signe for submitting these fantastic pieces you really did put a smile on my face!

And now, on with the awards!

Honourable Mentions:

http://left-unspoken.net/ch52/honourable-01.jpg
Dana
I absolutely adore the fact that what you used to construe a "life of meaning" was something that isn't alive at all. It was one of those odd oxy-morons where something without life can actually live a life of meaning and purpose. I really loved this idea and felt like, while the robot could never truly be happy, it could have meaning. So congratulations on one of the best ideas for this challenge, it was a nice surprise! Your lighting and colouring on this piece was fantastic, as was the manip you did. I really love this piece and am so glad you entered it!

http://left-unspoken.net/ch52/honourable-02.jpg

I love your texture and brushwork on this piece, mixed with the stocks and text, it all fits together nicely, and gives a very nice finished piece. I love the image of the road that Dean is on going off into the light, but death surrounding him - it really gave me that symbolic notion of Dean taking a dangerous journey, but him choosing to be on this path knowing that it is good and right and it gives his life meaning. I really loved the depiction of this in your piece, and felt that you really did deserve and award for it. :D

Fifth Place:

http://left-unspoken.net/ch52/place-05.jpg

5th Place - Slaygal
Another great use of the text here, with Buffy's belief that it must be on or the other. I really like the composition where you have Riley looking on at Buffy as she stares back in disbelief with the images of Faith and Angel at the back of her mind, that Riley just can't see of understand. And I love the choice of text you used to sum up the meaning behind the piece, I think it works really well. I'm not overly fond of the textures used in this piece, but the other elements in it all work really well together and make it an awesome entry, :D

Fourth Place:

http://left-unspoken.net/ch52/place-04.jpg

4th Place - Bre
I love how Peter had always been looking for a life of meaning - a purpose, and in saving the Cheerleader he felt like he had found his meaning, and his purpose, so I think this was a fantastic scene to focus on! I love the image of Peter as he looks of the page clear in his convictions, while Ando looks on at him questioning how he can be so sure when he is facing death. The composition worked really well for me in that respect, but I felt the colours were a little bland and monochromatic. But overall, a lovely piece, and a great interpretation of the challenge!

Third Place:

http://left-unspoken.net/ch52/place-03.jpg

3rd Place - Signe
I love your explanation, and have always felt that Dean has lived both happily and meaningfully - and I find it interesting that his deal actually lifted a load of him and gave him the opportunity to live life fully in the moment and to be happy - whereas before he felt burdened and constantly worrying about the future and living in their past. But what Dean did by sacrificing himself for Sam gave him back his sense of purpose and the meaning in his life. The composition of your piece was fantastic, having the brothers separated by this figure of 8, but at the same time using it to connect them showed how deep their relationship went. I love how you have images of Sam's death in the figure of eight, as this tells us it was these incidents that occurred that have separated them - but in the bigger picture they're still together. Loved it, :D

Second Place:

http://left-unspoken.net/ch52/place-02.jpg

2nd Place - Ehlwyen
This award is for all three of your pieces - I adored the way you took the challenge and managed to split it into three stages of Mick's life, to correspond to the text. The pieces themselves were all fantastic, from the colouring and lighting on the first one, to the composition of the third. They each told their own stories perfectly and combined, really gave a fuller understanding of Mick's life as he looked into his past and into his future seeing Coraline and their relationship constantly creating a madness in him, but then in the midst of all that as Mick lives in the present he is happy and this can be seen when he is with Beth. I really loved your interpretation, and also - Moonlight art! You need to tell me your high res cap site... I've just been using the high res episode promos (or my own LQ caps!).

First Place:

http://left-unspoken.net/ch52/place-01.jpg

1st Place - Jenni-Lou
I absolutely loved the way you took the quote and focussed on the sacrifice that Charlie made. I think he is the perfect character to sum up both sides of this quote happpiness and meaning. Charlie to me was always a live-for-the-present man on the island, and didn't live too much in the past or the future - but after discovering his fate he became a changed man, thinking about his past and his greatest "hits" and worrying about his future. To me, his sacrifice for two reasons: to make him happy in knowing that his sacrifice was for Claire's benefit, and also his death giving his life meaning - to save the others from the island. It was definitely my favourite interpretation of the text - and your piece just spoke volumes about Charlie's sacrifice and what it meant to the others, but the tagline "So much for fate" really did it for me - it was just a perfect quote to use for this piece. :D

Thank you again for taking part, I loved doing this challenge and can't wait to do another!

Wow, I love my award, it's so purty! And thank you so much for your words. It's great that you added comment to the winners so we knew what made you choose those particular pieces for the winning places. I'm glad you got my whole idea with the BuffyBot, I just got this amazing idea to make it when I saw the poster for Terminator (which is the base of the piece) and just had to turn it into the Bot and then it felt perfect for this challenge since it did have a life of meaning even if it was just a "thing". :)

Big congrats to the winners, and beautiful entries from everyone. Loved this challenge, was very different from the others and very inspiring :)

Thanx again!

Wow, thanks so much for the award and the comments (seriously, you explained what I was trying to convey in my work better than I can, lol). And I totally agree with who came 1st, it was awesome! :)
