Challenge 50: Music for the Vampires

Hey everyone! This is my first challenge and I am very excited about it because of all the talent on this forum.

Here's the deal.

As much as I would like to be incredibly unique in this, I'm throwing another lyrical challenge your way. Yeah, everyone does them, but hey, I find them to be rather inspirational. Plus, I've always found it to be cool to see how others could interpret some of my favorite music.

For what seems like forever, I have been a HUGE Type O Negative fan, with the album "October Rust" on me at all times. My husband likes to joke that if vampires were real, they would most definitely listen to these guys, which if you have heard them, may be pretty close to the truth. Hence, the name of the challenge.

Listed below are the lyrics (in the links) to all the songs on "October Rust". If you have the album, you will know I am not including the first two tracks and the final one because they are just talking, "The People's Liberation..." because it's just musical, and the song of silence "Bad Ground".

I have to limit the fandoms, basically because I like to know what is going on in the artwork. The following are TV shows I accept:

2. Feel free to enter as many times as you want - the more, the merrier. Please explain your work, too. Nothing too major, I just like a bit of background.

The challenge will close at 6PM Central Time on Saturday, January 5th. I like to take weekends to do stuff like this because my weeks are so packed with work.

Long winded circuitous explanation
I've always called Meg the Cinnamon Girl. Yes it started because the creepy van dude she kills in Scarecrow vaguely reminds me of Neil Young. However, the Type O version of the song really amps up the feeling of this mysterious girl who appears good and perfect on the outside but insidious, dark, and elusive on the inside.

Meg appears to Sam as the representation of all his dreams, hopes, and convictions of the world. He connects to her story and wants to follow her believing he can find contentment going to California. Instead the demon inside Meg actually has its own designs to lure Sam away from Dean and his real life.

So I wanted the piece to be about how Meg was actually the sum of an innocent girl animated by the vaporous demon. Sometimes the girl was able to come to consciousness but mostly she was trapped and used for the purpose of bait.

I chose the lyric, "Ten silver saxes, a bass with a bow, The drummer relaxes and waits between shows," since it reminded me of a fanciful illusion that would later be revealed to be dust. The imagery also reminded me of how in fairy tales, curses forced beautiful princesses to cause hurt they normally wouldn't. While the drummer relaxing and waiting between shows was the demon setting the pace and who would sometimes let the girl come to the surface until the demon again needed the body to do something. In addition the ideas of many orchestral pieces working in unison describes how the Meg we saw on screen was a culmination of many different forces, the girl, the demon, and the YED's plans.

Finally, because I love research and history, I looked up uses of cinnamon. Surprisingly enough cinnamon was once used to preserve bodies and disguise spoiled meat. Though it sounds utterly creepy, this fits perfectly with how the girl was used to disguise the ugly demon. And in reverse how the demon kept the body alive long after its expiration date.

Well, check me out, entering a challenge. Doesn't happen very often but I got seriously inspired by one of these songs and I must say when I read the remark about vampires.. I was intrigued and curious and so I opened photoshop and there you go :)

Entry One - Love in firelight
Explanation behind spoilercut.
We all know I am a Bangel and when I read the lyrics to "Be My Druidness" I immedietly thought of the episode "Suprise" when Buffy and Angel makes love (which leads to later badness but that's totally beside the point here!), especially when I read the text "I look deeply into your eyes, I smell your hair, caress your thighs. Now we'll make love by fire light, A blaze so high it lights the night." So with the help of caps from both "Suprise" and "Innocence" I tried to just bring out the fire they have in that moment, how much they want eachother and how intense this moment was both for the couple and the show. The piece is hard on texture but that is made on purpose because I wanted the grungy grainy feel to the piece to let the caps just melt together like the moment does on the show.

My latest obsession is One Tree Hill, and as soon as I read the lyrics yeah I think she's falling out of love, It reminds me of Brooke in season 4 telling Lucas she didn't miss him all day, and she wondered if he missed her, and she broke up with him in the end because she fell out of love with him basically.

Pretty simple. Angelus is the definition of evil. I just loved these lyrics in association with him - blood being a religion of its own, in his interpretation, to him - and this lovely image.

As usual I don't know who they are:) I'm kinda crap at interpreting lyrics but the song Haunted put me in mind of when Darla makes Angel a vampire. The lyrics I used from the song hopefully illustrates how she lured (if that's the word) Angel and as usual I'm not big with the explainy bit:D Caps are crappy quality I know (no reflection of SP) but you tend to find that with the first couple of season......plus I'm not so good with the cleaning up of them:(

This is from The X-Files season four episode "Memento Mori" and it's such a lovely Mulder/Scully moment. Such a sweet embrace. And the lyrics from "Die With Me" just seemed to fit so well. :) I always enjoy the opportunity to feel inspired to do some XF art. :)

I was reading through the lyrics for "Die With Me" and thought of Wesley & Fred... Especially the part "can i hold you, hold you, hold you all night long, since this is the last time" I thought it went well with the scene were Wesley is holding Fred as shes dying :(

First of all, great challenge Lady Manson ! And I hope I'm not too late :S


I think this scene fits well with those lyrics 'cause they both have a kind of dreamy aspect : we're not sure if it's real or not. So basically, this wall is about Sam having a vision of Jessica. I tried to give the piece the same effect than the song inspired me, so that's why I used a lot of stocks. I'm pretty happy, since I don't use them usually :)

Entry Two: The Green Man
I can believe nobody used Green Man!
When realising there was a little time left I just felt I had to work with this song to create a Lorne centric piece. For the first time I'm touching upon the moment when Lorne shoots Lindsay and then walks off. I've been pretty scared to make this scene because it's been used countless times but what the heck - why not! :) I felt the text "Life is coming to an end / Nature coming full circle / I'm the green man / The Green Man" felt so fitting for this moment as Lindsay's life came to an end and basically it was a full circle event considering how many times he's tried to kill our friends. I tried to keep the colors towards the green to underline both the text and that it's a Lorne piece. The rest of the thoughts I think speak for themselves, we all remember this moment..
