Challenge 49: The Four Seasons

Well, it's finally my turn....my first challenge here on the new buffyforums :)

For my break-out challenge, I wanted to do something fun, and I started thinking about the upcoming holidays, which lead me to think of the seasons of the year, which inspired this challenge idea! :D

Here's the what....

In this challenge you will be able to create art in one of four categories...Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter. Now there are many ways that you can interpret these categories, and I want you to get creative...but here are a few guidelines that I'd like you to incorporate:

Spring
When I think of spring, I think of new life, new love, romance, flirting, new beginnings, blossomings...you get the idea. But I also think of the visual of spring: greens, yellows, pinks, whites, and other pastels.

Summer
In Summer, I think of fun, pop, exciting, living life to the fullest. I also visualize bold colors like primary red, blue, yellow, and white. This is where I would place any pop-arty peices.

Fall
In the fall I think of strong emotions - passion, betrayl, anger, fire, jealousy, rage, lust. The colors to encompass these would be reds, oranges, browns, golds and blacks.

Winter
In the winter I think of dark cold things - such as death, brooding, mourning, sadness, depression, hopelessness, helplessness, etc. I would like to see cooler shades here - blues, purples, grays, silvers and blacks...this is also where a black and white peice would be accepted.


So what I want from you is to pick a season and use the guidelines to get creative. You don't have to stick just to TV fandom. You may use themes such as celebrities, landscapes, photography, your cat :p - whatever tickles your fancy. But because I will not only be judging your work on visual appearance but also on how well you incorporated the seasonal themes into your art, I ask that if you choose to art TV fandom, that you limit yourself to the shows I watch and am very familiar with so that I can know what's going on in the art. The shows permitted are:

Ok, so onto the rules:

1. Please title your work.
2. Please state clearly which season your entry falls under
3. Please credit your sources
4. You may enter 4 times - once per season.
5. Sizes - only traditional wallpaper sizes will be accepted - I do not like wallscrolls, sorry.
6. Please post your art as it comes in - NOT in one post because, well, I find that annoying....:hf2:
7. An explanation of your peice is not required, but it's always nice to get inside the artist's head to know where you're coming from in your interpretation...;)

The challenge will run for 4 weeks, as per the rules, and will close sometime on Saturday, December 29th.

BONUS Brownie points!
I love banners and find them to be my passion lately. So you are all invited to make a banner and icon set of your art. It doesn't have to be a smaller version of your wallpaper, but must have some aspect of your wall in it. I will be judging these separately from the regular walls and if there's enough entries for each season, I will display the winner of each season in my signature sometime during the season that they coincide with giving the winner credit. :xd So I highly encourage everyone to banner all of their entries! :D However, if you do choose to banner your art, I would request that you post your banner set in the same post as the wall it was taken from.

So I was thinking of what to do and Tori Amos's song "Winter" popped in and I immediately thought of some vulnerable Mulder/Scully-ness. :D And it was time to do another X-Files art so here it is!

This is from the season two episode "One Breath" were Scully suddenly returns after being abducted and presumed dead but she is in a coma. Mulder wants desperately to find the people responsible. So I made a sort of collage of the episode and chose just one line of lyric from the song.

After spending a week in a very cold New York, I was inspired to do a winter piece! The words seemed to fit Buffy's feelings towards her men during the seasons of the show. One minute she's very warm and loving and the next cold and indifferent. I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out as there was a lot of images as work here!

Thoughts on the art
I'm also going for a bit of Bangel love (you just can't get enough of it IMO). I love this pic of them. There is a kinda sad wistful look to it as if they realise the hopelessness of their love. I chose the song "A Winter's Tale" by David Essex to reflect that. I love the song and it suits them. Used stocks of a forest in winter and incorporated the purples etc as you suggested. I also attempted a banner/icon set of it. No too hot with these but I thought "what the hell, go for it" Link to song lyrics below.

ENTRY 2 : SPRING

Thought that the scene at the end of Chosen fitted the new life, new beginnings theme. Just used that one cap of Buffy at the end (several times) where she is looking over what was Sunnydale and there is such hope, joy on her face.....thinking that maybe she can have a different life now that the Potentials are there. Not everything rests on her shoulders anymore. Tried to incorporate the colours (it's suppposed to be pastel lilacish...turned out more purply:( ) Also thought the lyrics I used illustrated her feelings.

Wow, this challenge was a challenge ;) I tried to think of what I associated with the different seasons and so this first entry was created.

Summer
For me summer is no school. For two months I don't have to think of anything I don't feel like thinking of. It's relaxing with a good book, drawing and having fun. I tried to portray this with images of Tom Welling when he's basically just lying around doing nothing (that sounded so wierd).

The Winter of Discontent

"Winter" reminded me of this quote, which in turn made me think of the 7th season BtVS episode "Empty Places" in which the gang and the potentials let Buffy know of their displeasure and distrust, and Dawn turned Buffy out of her own house (- which is so coooold.)

I've always felt that summer was a time for expressing oneself, which also means expressing your wants - in this case, a daydream or fantasy. I wasn't sure as to whether this should have gone in Summer or Spring, but looking in on it, I feel it's more summery.

So, another Shakespearean name... Originally, I was going to call this piece "Summer Time", but it turned out so hazy and dreamy that I couldn't resist. :)
The inspiration comes from my present favorite, an Anime called Bleach. For those who are familiar, I was inspired by the character Kuchiku Byakuya.

ENTRY THREE: SUMMER

I have always loved this pic of Sarah..it's fun, kinda summery (her outfit looks like the stuff they used to wear years ago in the 50's or 60's in the summer) and I like to think it's a parasol she's holding and not an umbrella.:) This is the first time I've tried to do a pop-arty piece and I'm still unsure about it but what the heck!

First Entry: On and On (Winter, I guess)

Explanation:
I've been trying to work with these pictures of the model Lily Donaldson for the longest time. And then I read Twilight. Short backstory: Teenage girl (Bella, the narrator) moves to rainy Forks, and falls in love with a vampire (Edward). She meets his "family" (the Cullens), a coven of vampires who feed off of animal blood instead of humans. Most of them are pretty accepting of her. As much as I actually really like Edward and Alice (who befriends Bella), I took the most interest in Rosalie. As far as I've read (all of Twilight, but I haven't gotten to the other books yet), she seems fairly hostile towards Bella without really interacting with her. Maybe I just love her because I'm not too fond of Bella myself, or because I always think there's more to her than her beauty or how Bella sees her.

Anyway, the thoughts behind the art...Rosalie is described as model-like, statuesque and extraordinarily beautiful (the kind of beautiful that any girl would envy). And reading the book, I kept picturing Lily Donaldson as her (maybe because she's my favorite Cullen, and Lily's my favorite model). And yet, there's a mention that Rosalie is jealous of Bella (because Bella is human, and becoming a vampire wasn't a choice Rosalie would have made for herself) and angry that Bella is in on their secret, their lifestyle. Here's the part where I agonize over what season I would put this entry in...I thought of fall, because of her feelings towards Bella. But I thought that would be shown better if Bella had a presence in this piece. I finally decided on winter, because as much as she loves her family and as beautiful and arrogant as she is, she still makes me sad. She may be immortal, but she's still...dead. She's been condemned to this lifestyle for eternity, and there's still a longing to live a human life and die like she should have.

Second Entry: What It's All About (Summer)

Well, another piece featuring Lily (same editorial, too)! But this is actually just Lily, rather than a character.

Thoughts:I *knew* I would have to, have to, have to do a "summer" piece, because fun, bright-colored pieces are my favorite :xd But, I had to challenge myself somehow! I never really do model art, because 1) I don't really associate it with my fandoms and 2) Editorials are REALLY hard for me to work with! But I just LOVE these pictures, and I really wanted to try to make larger art out of them (I've only made icons prior). Anyway, I just wanted to do something fun and bright...Apologies for the humongous file size. One of the drawbacks of going a little saturated crazy.

Explanation!!
Okay so when i first read the rules for the challenge the song "Girl For All Seasons" popped into my head... For those not familiar its from Grease 2. Its pretty much about being someones girl for every season! Anywho the song has 4 parts to it, one part dedicated to each season. So i thought i would choose a female celebrity for each season and use the lyrics :D

Spring: So i chose Beyonce for this season as i found a great happy picture of her holding a sunflower. I put it back with a meadow of sunflowers that matched with the song lyrics.

Summer: Mariah is frolicking on the beach being all in love awww.

Autumn/Fall: Britney is hanging out in a forest with all the falling leaves... I think shes just been dumped :(

Winter: JLO is the ice queen! Rocking it out making you feel warm inside!

Woa I hope this in time, I've been meaning to enter it in for ages.

well my piece is for Winter as it was Joyce summers funeral, I wanted to show how angel is still there for her, and it was a really wintery scene, I used the lyrics We belong together by Mariah carey not because it suited the scene but more of the images. (I'm never good at explaining myself)

Winter
The winter... I love the winter. However, out of a metaphoric POV, winter is when verything gets cold - and dies. My winter piece is therefore of an eventually very loveless and cold relationship. I don't think that Lauren ever really neurished any "fussy" emotions towards Vaughn.

Like I stated when setting up this challenge, I was going to be judging in different areas. This first area I judged on was for the best seasonal theme by use of colors and textures. The peices featured here really went all out to use some great textures and colors to illustrate the season of their choice :)

This was so masterfully detailed in textures and colors that I spent a very long time studying it. I'm a sap when it comes to beautiful landscape art, and this was just simply stunning. :)

I was totally in awe of the incredible texture work that incorporated such beautiful spring colors in this peice. Plus I have always loved that picture of SMG and have tried unsuccessfully many a time to art using that picture...really pretty entry :)

Best Use of Seasonal Theme - Emotion
In this category I based my judgement on how well the artist brought out the emotion of the chosen seasonal themes. These peices really made me 'feel' the seasons.

This just took my breath away. The choice of lyrics was so beautifully matched up with the scene choice. Very good choice of emotion for this winter theme - a time of death and sadness. This peice had me a bit teary, I must admit...:p

Aww, what a beautiful picture...Wesley dying in Illyria's arms. I love the work you did on Illyria's eyes in this. It really brought out the depth of emotion to this scene. :)

I loved this peice back when I saw it the first time around, and I'm so glad you entered it here. It fit so completely with the winter theme, with Gile's shock and sadness and mourning. Very good work emotional darkness.

Best Use of Seasonal Theme - Interpretation
Here I judged the entries on how well they interpreted the seasonal theme. I was judging not only on how well they incorporated the emotions that I set forth in the guidelines, but also on the color schemes, texture use, and even layout for those seasons. These entries I felt just has an overall great seasonal interpretation.

1st Place:


Jenni Lou for "Change"
I so loved this collage. First off, I love that you did Winter so that you could use blues! :D I see so much of yoru work in red (which is beautiful) but I loved seeing a 'change' with the blues. Secondly, you totally picked an outstanding subject for this theme. That episode is practically the embodiment of this season. Thirdly, I loved the art itself! :D Very great layout! I'm always impressed at how well you can fit so much into a small space without it looking crowded. I especially liked the lighting effects and the text layout. Very visually stunning. Great work! :xd

First off just let me say that I was a bit leery about letting you include this simply because I like to know the material I allow so that I can judge interpretations fairly. But I must say that even without reading this book I couldn't help but find this touching. I don't know if Winona Ryder is actually portrayed as the character, or if you chose her, but the look on her face is so sad and haunting and it matches up with the quotes you used so perfectly that I come away from looking at that feeling very sorry for this girl. I love the colors you used - It feels very hollow and empty - and a great choice for the winter theme. Great layout as well, especially with the text...:)

Fuzzy for "Springtime Bloom"
This was such a beautiful work of art! I loved everything about it. I loved the use of the sunflowers and the creativity you used in all of your peices with the seasonal lyrics. Beautiful layout to this...My eyes were especially drawn to the texture work in greens near the edgings of the art. I really love the contrasting colors you used to with the greens pinks and yellows - a totally spring explosion! Very fabulous work!~:D
