I just Received the "NEW" Angel Complete Series Boxset. And I was wondering If anyone else had decided to buy it. and What your thoughts on The Boxset

I haven't bought it and don't plan on buying it, but I was wondering what you thought of it, skinless.

It looks a little like the Rambaldi Collection for Alias, imo. What's the setup? Is there anything extra like an extra disc like the Buffy one had?

Just wondering :)

No Extra Disc. Sorry But As far as the specific contents of this package go, you have all of the 110 original episodes with all of the extra features included in the original DVD sets. In addition, there is a companion booklet and a special letter to fans from Joss Whedon.

Oh, so there's really no reason for anybody who has them all to sell them and buy this?

If so, I think it's an awesome choice for anybody who does not have Angel, but for people who owns it, is not worth the hassle to sell and buy this for a letter from Joss.

I was looking at this on Things from Another World (or Planet?) today. It was only like $110.00 there, but I'm cheap so, I'll probably just buy them separate and save like $10.00 since the slim sets are like $20.00 each, depending where you get them. Especially since it'd be like paying $10.00 for a letter.

I Payed $99.00 on Amazon.com to get so I felt that I got it for a pretty good price. But that just what I think

Sounds just like the Chosen set for Buffy--yeah, I was afraid this would happen as soon as I bought all the seasons of Angel! :s And it looks so much prettier too, with the blue....oh well....*sigh*

It's a good deal I would think though if you don't own any of Angel--like the Chosen set (which I lovingly refer to as "the Buffybox") was for me....

How are the discs arranged inside? In little "booklet" style things?

Unfortunately, I don´t have al of Angel seasons. I only have season one and two on DVD, so I guess I´m a little behind on the Angel seasons.

I don't have any Angel stuff.. so this is a great Xmas present :)..

:yay!:

to be honest.. I've never seen a bit of season 3.. 1

1. Is it any good?
2. What is the general consensus?
3. Known as the "dark" season.. Why is it dark?

1. Hell yes! It's a bit more one-shot driven than later seasons, but the characters are great and it has some amazing stuff later in the season (5x5, Sanctuary, Blind Date, and TSILA.)
2. Angel really starts coming into his own in this season, great work by DB and co, and probably has my favorite Angel moment of all time in it.
3. Maybe the best season overall, so much happens at such an incredible pace that it is hard to keep up, but it is awesome. The last half of this season and the first several eps of S4 are probably Angel's best run.

I appreciate your take.. but you still didn't answer me. I wanted to know the general consensus.. as in the general opinion on the season (most people think...)

I also wanted to know how is it dark.. what gives the season the "dark" title as with season 6 has that title..

As for your best episodes comment.. I can't imagine any episode run being better than the last 7 episode stretch in season 5.

Well I personally LOVE season 3, but we don't exactly have the same tastes, so who knows? ;) The general consensus is though that it's a very strong season (not many "stinkers", and even the worst epp isn't that bad and pretty decent), even if not full of as many striking epps as some others. The baby!Connor storyline with Darla and Daddy!Angel is great, Fred is introduced (so if you don't like her you might not like it), and the Wesley betrayal storyline is great. Some highlights are Lullaby, Birthday (in MY opinion, and yours too if you like AUs), Waiting in the Wings, Sleep Tight, Forgiving, Benediction, and Tomorrow.

It also is the most Cangel-y season, though they don't technically ever get together of course, so if you hate Cangel you might not like this season as much. And I don't think it's called the "dark" season, that would be more season 4 by far--though it does get kind of Dark after Wes's betrayal, which kind of sends Angel over the edge a bit and starts Wes down the dark and lonely path of "Dark!Wes," lol....

Def. worth a shot though, it is a very good, solid season, and really you should see all of Angel anyway. I heard some negative things about season 4, and so wasn't sure if I should buy it, and then ended up loving it. Everyone has a different opinion, so you can't trust the general consensus anyway--lots of people love season 3 Buffy for example, and I hate it!

I'd like you to see it anyway so you can honestly say you think AHITW is the best of the series, when right now I don't think you can say that having not seen it all! :p

I kind of wish I didn't have all of Angel already so I could get the Angelbox (which looks very pretty--saw a full pic of the inside and such in USA today, it's just like the Chosen collection in format), though I like my boxes too--I carry seasons 1-4 in a CD case anyway, nice and compact....

It makes me wonder if they'll actually reproduce Buffy and Angel boxes for Blu-Ray and/or HDDVD.

I would love it if they come out with a single master boxset for Buffy *and* Angel together -- 254 episodes.

Man, that would be big! Not easy to carry around...;)

Can they do that though with two different shows, esp. when they split networks at a certain point? Or does it not matter since it's the same distributor for both?

KingofCretins
04-12-07, 04:05 AM
I assume since the producing studio -- FOX -- is the same for both, that they can be packaged and released together. I think they'd have to package the discs like four to a case or something just to get it to a manageable size. Ooh, since it would be probably $250 or $300 anyway, they might package it in a replica of the VAMPYR book :)

But does Fox own the rights to the comics? If not, I doubt that could happen....

And good lord, there's going to be a season 9 as well? :s

KingofCretins
04-12-07, 06:13 AM
I don't think you could get a packaging deal together for the comic, because I'm pretty sure that's all Dark Horse other than certain reserved rights, like Buffy's likeness (Sarah has the rights to it).

Yes, Sherrilina, shortly into Season 8, Joss apparently took it's nearly universal critical success and fan popularity as an affirmation of the project and announced Season 9 would follow :)

Although it's offtopic..

Sherrillina.. are you ready to give up now? If this is the case, you might as well not read the rest.. because you don't seem to have any desire to.. even by the first arc. Do you really hate stills that much? Even if the show is continuing.. the medium is that bothersome? It can't be the quality that's the major problem.. and if it is.. how can you complain about it continuing? Were you ready give up when Buffy vs Dracula came on?

You're right.. you can't package it all together.. I was just 1+ing you.

I might still give it another chance if I can get issue 3, etc....but right now that's kind of an effort, since they're not as widely available as the shows are! ;)

And why would I have been ready to give up when the great Buffy vs. Dracula epp came out, followed by the best season of Buffy?

1. Yep! Third best season of Angel, imo, after Season 2 and Season 4! Loved it :)
2. About the same as what I said. Some say better, some say worse. But, they don't think it's any worse than Season 1.
3. It's known as the dark season? Didn't know that. It's no darker than Season 3, but maybe because the characters change in such a drastic change and become sadder and angrier. I don't know, just a though.

I already have the entire series in both slim-set and full-set. With no extra disc, I couldn't see any possible reason for buying this collection. They should have at the VERY least given us a bonus disc. Or eight.

Okay, question regarding both the box set and the slim set. I only have Seasons 1&2 in the full, original set so far. So, here are my questions:

What Special Features are offered in the Box Set? Are they the same as the original release? Is there anything special about the booklet, other than a letter from Joss?
Same question for the Slim Set. Are the features the same as in the original release? Is a booklet included? Anything special about the booklet?

Thanks for your help!

Well if it's like the Buffy Chosen Collection boxset, the booklet just has a feature in the beginning of Joss's fave epps not written/directed by him (10-11), and then there's a complete epp guide disc by disc, season by season with 1-2 sentence summary for each epp and a picture. The Joss letter is small and square and not really anything that special. If you've already got part of the series I don't think it's worth it to buy the box set unless you can sell the ones you have already for a good price on ebay. I only got the Buffy one b/c I currently didn't own any of Buffy and furthermore hadn't seen the last two seasons yet (and the place I was renting them didn't have them)--so it was a bargain and the best deal for me! Sadly though I already have all of Angel, so not getting the boxset as pretty as it is....:(

Thank you, sherrilina, for the info. I have all seasons of BtVS, the original releases. I had been considering the Box Set if I could find a good deal. I'm considering the Slim Sets for my sister, who I turned onto the show. Does anyone know if the Slim Sets have the same Special Features as the originals? I have not yet been able to find anything definitive on this.

I do have Seasons one & two of AtS, but thought I'd found a pretty good deal on the box set. But I can probably get the remaining three seasons for less, though, and am not sure what I could get for the two I've got. I really just want to be sure that all the same Special Features are included, so I don't miss out on anything. I'm guessing they really just took the existing discs and put them all together in a pretty box.

Actually there was an extra disc in the BuffyBox (what I dubbed my Chosen Collection, lol), but there wasn't too much on there, one round-table interview looking back on stuff mainly, but maybe you could always rent it from Netflix and burn it? I don't know about the Angel one, there may be something similar, but I don't think it's worth buying the whole box for unless you find a really good deal....

If you don`t have all seasons of Angel, I think you should try and grab them as soon as you can. Even season 4, despite some of it`s more icky themes. ( Or the one icky plot point I can`t stomach)

Season 2 and 3 are my favorites if I look at the seasons as a whole. Season 3 has the most mind blowing, breathtaking scene ever made in the show - it also has many great episodes you really don`t want to miss.

But then again, I see no point in just owning season 1 and 2 when theres 5 to be had :)

Oh, I absolutely intend to own all five seasons...I'm working on my collection but it's slow going. I have seen all five seasons and can't wait to get the rest of the series. However, I was just wondering if it was worth it to buy the box set when I've already got two seasons or if I should just keep going one season at a time. I'm dying for Season 3, but I refuse to pay US$50 per season. However, before breaking down and purchasing the more affordable slim sets I was just curious about the extras...I don't want to miss out on ANYTHING.

One of the best, if not *the* best season--I think it's my favorite in any case, and no one can deny it's one of the strongest, most solid seasons in quality--even the worst epps of it aren't *that* bad, and it has some really great highlights as well. Go for it, you shouldn't be disappointed! :xd

I´m planning to start from season one. I´m gonna start tonight.

I'm glad to have the complete Angel series in this format. It's convenient. However, they tried to make the booklet sound like it was more than what it was(an episode guide). It as tauted as a "special collector's book. I was under the impression that it was a book similar to the one that came with the complete Alias collection. IMO all series should come with an episode guide. That is not an extra. Plus, the guide isn't as thorough as Buffy's episode guide.

This is a great thread, It took me ages to get all the Angel series because I was collecting the 'Bible Book' UK releases thats not available anymore as thats what my Btvs was. After many many auctions and a fair bit of dosh I finally got there.
Then I saw the box set from the states and thought what am I missing?
If its just a booklet and a letter I am quite glad I stuck with it as when I had lost about my 20th auction to buy series 5 of Angel (which is the most expensive second hand dvd series I have ever bought,) I was ready for chucking it all in and selling the four I already had and putting the money to buying either the cheaper newer UK releases or the American box set. (luckily I can play both regions)

It still didn't stop me wondering what was new on the set though. Now I know. thanks.

To those that perhaps have one or two, if you can get the box set for a good enough price then it might be worth your while getting it and selling on your single sets. I have never bought new DVDs for years (I grudge the price) and the market for used ones if they are in excellent condition is quite robust and there are lots of collectors like me looking to complete their sets.
The first release UK book style Angel season 5 finally cost me £58 uk pounds plus extra for postage! I didn't have the internet at home and had to go to my public library to get online and the morning I won it I let out a very loud squeal in the reading section where the computers were! The librarian was not amused hee hee!

I dont really know what releases you have where you are but if it helps I could have bought Season 5 of Angel new from my high street store for just £23 in its later release plastic case! My family think I am insane for paying more than twice that but I am a collector what can I say. If where you are they release series the same as they do here in the UK in a collectors packaging for a limited time only then delete it and rerelease it in a normal cheaper packaging. Then bear in mind that there are still people who will pay good money for the earlier editions.
