I know the forum's back up right now but when I try to access this specific thread, there's a database error still. I've given it quite a few days now but it's not changed. So I can't access it :( The odds that the forum will go down are quite good though so I thought I might aswell make a thread here.
This battle is about Buffy the Vampire Slayer, back to the basics. The show recently celebrated his 10th anniversary and to express our love for the best show ever, we're going for a 7 round battle !
You guessed right, 14 rounds, 7 seasons, 2 pieces by season. Nonetheless, it's not a simple "favorite moments" battle. We're going to focus on a character. After some discussions, we've decided it'd be Buffy. The show has always been about women power and how a woman is as competent as a man to be responsible of others and lead. We want the battle to show how Buffy went to a reluctant teenager to a strong and confident woman in her Slayer role. Each round will be about a season, we have to choose a scene that we think is defining in her developpement, that is important and made her grow to who she is right now (Well, in Joss's head ).
The battle requirement is to take part of the previous art into your own. To create something based on the aesthetic and thematic part of the art to give a flow to the battle. The second requirement is some little trick we ask the other
Here are the previous entries from the both of us:
Round 1: Romain
http://www.escaping-madness.net/images/battle/PrepareMeSmall.jpg (http://www.escaping-madness.net/images/battle/PrepareMe.jpg)
This piece is about Buffy & Giles first real discussion about her duty. She can't see the importance of her role, she's facing her destiny but she refuses to embrace it, considering that it'll leave her apart again.
Round 2: Line
http://shattered.escaping-madness.net/art/bigthumbs/prophecygirl02.jpg (http://shattered.escaping-madness.net/art/btvs_ats/1024/btvs_prophecygirl02.jpg)
I wanted to show how much Buffy matured throughout the short season 1. How she began to more and more accept her role as the slayer and protector of not only her friends but everybody else around her.
This moment I feel, defines this very well. Buffy is realising that by not doing her duty as the slayer and by not facing up to the Master, people around her will die - people she cares about will die.
This is about how she stands up to Giles (yet again she doesn't do what he says) and decides to go against the Master.
Round 3: Romain
http://www.escaping-madness.net/images/battle/YourDemiseSmall.jpg (http://www.escaping-madness.net/images/battle/YourDemise.jpg)
I wanted to portray her relationship with Angel/Angelus. This is the best metaphor for this realisation. She find out that the man she loves is not what he seemed and finally came back to her role of Slayer, she has to deal with it this way. It's another way to show how interwined both lives, Slayer & Woman, are.
I wanted to show the moment she realised Angel is not here anymore. She's dealing with Angelus and even though he looks the same, he's clearly another entity. She's to get back to the Slayer, the strong female figure she used to be and stop caring for him. The colors are dark and washed, intense. In the upper left corner, there's a reminder of Buffy's "I'm the Slayer" confidence speech. As an echo, the red letters "I'm the Slayer" and the cut face is about her shattered Innocence.
Round 4: Line
http://shattered.escaping-madness.net/art/bigthumbs/becomingpt2.jpg (http://shattered.escaping-madness.net/art/btvs_ats/1024/btvs_becomingpt2.jpg)
I decided to do this final scene of Becoming part 2 because it really shows that even though Buffy is the slayer, she is also still a teenage girl who shouldn't have to deal with all these things that's going on.
But she deals with it and she makes the ultimate sacrifice, she got her love back to the way he was and then she had to kill him. She had to sacrifice her own happiness.
This scene I chose, the end scene, shows so much emotion to me - it just shows how much pain Buffy feels. I wanted to show Buffy looking back at her house and then walking away leaving Sunnydale behind her. I also felt I needed to take the part from Romain's art that has Angel reflecting in Buffy's eye, because that exact thing was what triggered everything. I chose to use the quote (I think it's spoken by Oz?) from the end of Becoming part 1 because I really loved it and I thought it fit well with my thoughts behind this wall.
Round 5: Romain
http://www.escaping-madness.net/images/battle/HelplessSmall.jpg (http://www.escaping-madness.net/images/battle/Helpless.jpg)
I've chosen to portray Helpless. In this episode, Buffy realise, experiment, feel the fact the she IS the Slayer. Being the Slayer is part of her and she can't go back or leave it like she used to do. Previously, she accepted her role because she thought she had to. From now on, she accept it cause it's who she is. That's my take on it anyway.
Round 6: Line
http://shattered.escaping-madness.net/art/bigthumbs/promthumb.jpg (http://shattered.escaping-madness.net/art/btvs_ats/1024/btvs_prom.jpg)
I wanted to do that scene when Buffy turns around as she realises it's her that's being talked about, but I decided against it because of the requirement Romain set (the Star Wars poster style). I thought that style really spoke this moment to me and while it might not be an earth-shattering defining moment for Buffy, I do believe it is an important one.
She wanted that Prom so bad. She really wanted to go to the prom with her friends and her boyfriend and feel part of the seniors at High School, the final year - the final dance. Quite literally.
She wanted and fought for a normal night for her friends, to be happy and to dance and to enjoy their prom, even though she herself was heartbroken and I admire the fact that she still came to the prom after Angel broke up with her and told her he was leaving town.
The fact that he showed up just makes this moment more important to me. It's an era of Buffy's life coming to an end. Not only her relationship with Angel, but her senior year of high school aswell.
There's no more pretending... she is the slayer and she can't really date a vampire, as much as she wants to it leads no where in the end. It's heartbreaking and sad but it's the reality for her.
Angel showing up that night gave her one last feel of being normal. A normal girl at her prom with her boyfriend.
Round 7: Romain
http://www.escaping-madness.net/images/battle/BeautifulLiarSmall.jpg (http://www.escaping-madness.net/images/battle/BeautifulLiar.jpg)
Thoughts about this. First of all, what a difficult requirement...I was so used to pick my pictures (got like 4 CDs full of stocks to choose from) that it was hard to find something approx. close to what I wanted. I'm half please with this art, like some parts but overall, not happy . It's about coming back to reality for Buffy. After her "Fairy Tale" portrayed on your last piece. I wanted to say, Okay, it was fun but it's a dream, a lie and the prince does not exist. It's a scene when Buffy walk alone in the park, after Parker left her as we all know. It's about her realisation she's back into reality, no charming prince for her or for anyone (yeah, positive me)
Ok so Romain's requirements for me this round was to not use any stocks or textures other than caps from the episode I chose.
Also I had to use the following filters: glowing edge, half tones and colored pencil.
Now, I had a looooong think about which episode to do and which moment but in the end I decided that a really important moment for Buffy is actually when, with the help of her friends, she taps into the powers of the first slayer.
I just think that after their fallout in The Yoko Factor, where Buffy says that thing about the chosen one and her friends, that this just proves that she needs them. There's a lot of moments where she has to be the strong one, has to be the one who saves the day, but in the end she could not do it - could not be the strong one - without having the support of her friends.
That is why I decided on this moment, where Buffy is 'hit' with the combined power of her three friends because I think it really makes us realise (and they realise afterwards) that Buffy wouldn't be the way she is, wouldn't be as strong as she is mentally, without the support and love of her friends.
Round 8: Power

Now for you Romain, I don't know.... I'm feeling very uninspired for ideas right now :p
I think I want you to use 4 caps in your piece and it can have no text. I'd also like you to use the following filters: Smudge Stick, Patchwork and Fragment.
Yes, that's it I think :D
