So, for my forth challenge, I decided to make it about languages. I'm a language whore and I love studying them, so I thought it would be a good theme.

I know that many people here speak English as a second language (me included), so I'd like you to include at least one word in your mother tongue in your piece with the English translation if possible. For those who only speak English, try to find at least a word in another language using an online translator or dictionary. I know that these things aren't always accurate but it doesn't really matter. Write the translation too, if possible.

Fandoms: Anything. Put spoilery pieces in spoiler tags.
Sizes: Nothing smaller than 800x600.
Entries: Unlimited. Post them in the same post or as they come, I don't care.
Deadline: November 11th, 2007 (4 weeks)

English is my first language and sadly, my only one as well. Those damn French classes never took. :down: But I am sure I can come up with some ideas, the first being from "The Girl in Question"...no explanation needed. :lol:

:roll: Spanish was really easy for me in high school, but it just didn't stick! Also, I grew up in a house where English was a second language, and somehow I still only speak English!

OMG, you have no idea how much I've missed this place!

When I first saw this challenge I thought it'd be a great oppotunity to do a couple of pieces in Spanish (my first language), but nothing came up. So here's a this a simple Mal/Inara manip, showing the chinese symbol for Love.

I actually thought of making this wall before this challenge came along. I was listening to the full spanish version of Nelly Furtado's Te Busque and it kind of fit the Maya/Alejandro story line. So I went with it, I got the translation first to make sure the song wasn't about kissing or anything, just to be safe, but the chorus:

Te busqué
Debajo de las piedras y no te encontré
En la mañana fría y en la noche
Te busqué, hasta enloquecer
Pero tu llegaste a mi vida como una luz
Sanando las heridas de mi corazón
Y haciéndome sentir vivo otra vez

which translates to

I looked for you
Under the rocks and I didn't find you
In the cold morning and the night
I looked for you, until getting crazy

But you came to my life as a light
Healing the wounds of my heart
And making me feel alive once again

Kind of fit how the two characters (even though siblings) really needed each other to live. Since Maya was the poison and Alejandro was the heal. So I used the last three lines, I just felt it fit really well. I didn't think it was too loveydovey for the twins, though some might.

I HAD to do a Sailor Moon piece, cause comeon, Japan's queen^^ I have an idea for another one, but for now I'll just go with this. Odango-atama is a joke at Sailor Moon's hair, since it looks Odango's (japanese food bun).

About: Basically I wanted to do a piece focussing on Dean's new lust for life and how he is seizing the day, every day and living for the moment now that he's got limited time left. I want to use the fire to show both his new-found fire for life and also to show the reason for his fire, the fact that he's heading toward hell. Similarly I wanted to use the sand-timer to show his time is running out, but the clock to re-iterate the fact that he's living every minute of every day. I thought the purple worked to show this transitional period in his life between life and death, and it worked as a gateway between the lights and darks of the piece. I really wanted the whole thing to fade into darkness, as eventually he too will fade away and be gone. Well, hope it worked out like that anyway!

Secondly, my usual disclaimer- still new to PS... so this is fairly basic.

The Background info:
The lyrics are from "Anyplace, anywhere, anytime" which is by Nena and Kim Wilde. The cool thing about it, is this song has Kim Wilde singing in English, and Nena in German- a pop song which code switches! Woot! And actually, I find Nena incredibly sexy, and this clip is no exception. I :heart: Nena.
So I was listening to it the other day, had just read about your challenge: it was clear: two sexy women with a certain understanding... Buffy and Faith may have their differences, but before the differences, before they didn't speak each other's dialect, they did.

The translation:
something like "in the space between time and place, direction neverending, moths fly around the light, just like you and I" and then "Give me your hand, I'll build you a castle out of sand, anyhow, anywhere, anytime".

Some info:
Many of you have probably heard of The Hives. They're a rock band from Sweden, which just happens to be the country where I live. They come from a small (and I know it's small since I've been there five or so times) twon called Fagersta. Anyway, Howlin' Pelle (Almqvist) is one of the coolest people living on Earth! And there's this Swedish rap-song called "Mr. Cool" (by Snook) that I love. So I used that lyric for this piece. The translation is (about) "This is the story about the coolest cat in the long land Falun sausage" (A Falun sausage is just a thick sausage...)

Superb idea for a challenge:2party:

English is my native language and the only one that I speak. Well, I used to do French and German at school but that was 20 years ago so I've forgot anything I ever learned:D

Sooo after frantic searching of the internet I came up with these two.

ENTRY ONE

I love Celine Dion (no laughing at the back please) and I have always loved the song Tu M'aimes Encore even though I never knew what she was singing about as it's in French, I just loved the emotion and power in her voice. So after looking at the translation of it I came up with this piece about Spike in Lover's Walk. Dru has dumped Spike and he arrives in Sunnydale a little bit the worse for wear. He kidnaps Xander and Willow and forces Willow to perform a love spell to make Dru love him again. I thought the lyrics of the song really fitted the scene. Sincer apologies to all the french speaking people on here if the translation isn't right.

Being a bit of a romantic at heart I wanted to do a bit of a soppy piece and I love the scene in The Gift where Xander asks Anya to marry him. Soo back onto the internet to find out how to say Will You Marry Me? in French. Ended up with just the one as I just couldn't get it to work with anymore than that.

It took me a while to think one for this challenge but recently a song came out from Leona Lewis - bleeding love and I thought most of the lyrics from this song summed up Buffy and Spikes relationship so I made a promotional piece on the words Bleeding Love, and english is my native language, so it was still hard to decide which language to go with but I went with Italian, I think because it suited the piece more :s

Entry 1

Wellllll, I've never entered a challenge here before, but I was bored and I saw this which I think is such a nice idea for a challenge :)
I did a really simple piece of Rose McGowan, because I think she's really beautiful, especially in the two pictures I used.
The language used is French - 'par autre nom'. I used a free translation thing online so it might not be 100% accurate, but it should hopefully say "by any other name" - which is of course from the quote "A rose by any other name".

Entry two
Oh, I :heart: this challenge! I get to use Swedish lyrics and I have a good reason to do so as well! :D It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy... OK, back to the subject, my entry (I'm ego-centric today aren't I). The lyrics are in Swedish (as staded above) since I'm Swedish (and proud!). Veronica Maggio's "Nöjd" (pleased or satisfied), which basically is about a woman never finding a guy she's satisfied with. In season one, Sookie talks about the "cha-cha" Lorelai makes at a certain point in a relationship, (in the same conversation she says about Max "He's a great guy... for someone"). Anyway, in the early seasons, she does kiss a few toads (so to speak).

The translations goes like this (I'm improvising here people, so they're more "interpretations")...

When I saw this challenge, I knew that I couldn't let Signe be the only one with swedish text! :P And the challenge came right on time since my best friend just started brainwashing me with the new Kent album! (I know, it's depressing and predictable but they're very good songwriters!)

So my first entry is from Heroes, when West tells Claire that "trust begins with a leap" and that she can share her fears with him. And that made me think of the lyrics to "Våga vara rädd" (Dare to be afraid) by Kent.

Text: From the Episode (3.02 "My Big Fat Greek Rush Week")

So, I bought the Veronica Mars Season 3 boxset last weekend (and just finished my marathon-rewatch today, might I add) and when I rewatched episode 3.02, this was one of the scenes that really stood out to me and I knew I wanted to artify sooo badly. So I did. I took two lines of dialogue exchanged in this scene and then looked up - since my spanish is relatively rusty - a Spanish translation of "Hurt," however the best I could come up with was "Harm." So, for those curious: daño = harm. And, thus, this piece came to be! :)

*runs in. I'm here! I made it! Whew. Okay so I wanted to do this piece for this challenge and haven't been home much, but I saw it was about to close so I hurried up and made it.

I chose to do a Heroes piece of Hiro when he arrives in New York in the first season. Yatta translates into "I did it!" and he's just so excited I couldn't help myself.

This is from Sex & The City... In the season 1 finale, Carrie says to Mr Big that she loves him, but that she canìt leave with him, because she realizes that they don't want the same things from a relationship. it was a very sad moment. I used my mother tongue, Italian.

I decided to use a Latin phrase because I'm learning Latin at school and have always been interested in the language (mainly due to Harry Potter and Buffy spells!). I chose the phrase ab aeterno meaning 'from eternity'. I thought the ancient language fit very well with Illyria as an Old One and how she (or it/he depending on you POV, I prefer she) is older than anything on Earth.
