Challenge 42: The Penal System's a Name That Makes us Giggle

I've spent the past week or two stressing out, pulling my hair out, and doing other very not-so-happy things involving the word "out" because I knew that my time to host my fifth challenge was quickly approaching and I knew that I had 3 ideas that needed to be narrowed down to one.

And so, just an hour ago, I stormed into the VIP Lounge, threw my hands up, and screamed like Phoebe when she was a banshee in "Look Who's Barking" (Charmed reference, for those who don't know) and, eventually, my lovely friends came to my aid and helped me make my decision. Most notably Ehlwyen, my sunshine, who helped me develop my idea into a pretty cool challenge.

Ok, enough with the boring backstory that nobody really cares about. This "Previously On..." is over. Let's cut right to the episode, shall we?

Ah, those adorable Gilmore Girls. Inspiring another fanart challenge of mine (the other being "Brazzlefrat," from a while back). For those of you who don't watch, Lorelai Gilmore spoke that line to her daughter, Rory, after she stole a yacht, got arrested, and woke up the next morning to find her mother busting her chops over it all.

But that's not the point. What is the point, you ask?

The law. The rules. The authority figures. And the rebellions.

Every tv show or movie or whatever has it. Someone who lays down the law and/or enforces it. Someone who holds you responsible if you break a rule or law. And people who rise up against these people who lay down and/or enforce the law.

And that's what I want you to focus on and draw inspiration from for this challenge.

I wanna see pieces about authority figures or about laws/rules or about people who break laws/rules. Show me characters...show me scenes...Hell, show me a show!

Now, for organization purposes AND because everyone's doing it lately and I wanna be cool like them, I'm dividing the challenge into three categories to make things easier for me. And I want you to state which category your piece falls into.


CATEGORIES:

1. The Law & the Rules: pieces that focus on specific restrictions on characters. Doesn't have to be legal things. It can be an emotional restraint put on them by somebody else. This can mean scenes or even characters. However you get it across is fine.

2. The Authority Figures: pieces that focus on characters that create and/or enforce laws or generally show authority over other characters. This can mean scenes where someone is showing authority or characters pieces about an authoritarian person.

3. The Rebellions: pieces that focus on characters fighting against rules or laws or authority figures. This can mean scenes that show a rebellion or characters who fight against the law or whatever.


Again, please state which category your piece falls under. :)

All right, this one is pretty straightforward. I started on it a few weeks ago, finished/gave up on it, and made some tweaks just a minute ago. Named in honor of an internet author. Red and black, a collage of the characters doing what they do best. It didn't turn out quite as good as I'd've liked it to be, mostly due to crowding because I had too many moments to fit in, but here goes anyway.

I decided I wanted to do some Felicity art. :D And I chose the episode "Revolutions" where Felicity learns that their university health clinic no longer gives out the morning after pill and so she decides to stage a sit-in. This fits under The Rebellions category. I chose to do a sort of simple collage of the episode with a quote from Felicity's advisor.

This is for Category 1 rules & restrictions. Basically I just watched the first epsiode of season three supernatural and when I read the 'rules forced on characters' thing it totally reminded me of the final scene where Dean tells Sam the rules of his trade that they must abide. So I really wanted to do a piece where Dean states the rules, and sees the consequences of this unfolding should he break them - which I tried to signify with this big lightening break through the piece. Anyway, that was my idea. Hope this fits!

This one is for Category one. Very simply, Buffy thinks she is the law because she is the only person who can defeat the demons. I did this piece a while back and as soon as I read this challenge I knew I wanted to re-do this scene. Still not entirely happy with how it turned out, don't think I ever will be. I wanted to do a piece where I can include a speech, I've only really ever done one before, but I always liked this part of the episode because I think that it's when she finally realises that she can't hold back because of human rules.

This would fit into #3 Rebellions. It features Buffy from the Wish universe, she follows her own rules, doesn't take any input from anyone else (or let anyone get close). She's really a tragic figure because she never finds a balance, and ultimately dies for it, but she's cool anyway.

Okay, so this is my second entry and is strangely enough from Moonlight, although it's not one of my favourite shows out of the new seasons I was sitting watching the latest episode when 'rules' kept getting mentioned and hence, I got a little bit of inspiration to make this. I don't know if it needs spoiler-tagged or not, but I'm doing it just in case.

About: Basically we've heard them dicsussing in Moonlight about how vampires have their own set of rules, covering things like: not leaving bodies lying, not drawing attention, etc. etc. But in this latest episode "Dr. Feelgood" we saw that the rules expand further than just that, and that a sire must take in a newly vampire and teach them the rules of thier kind etc. This wallpaper is about a rogue vampire who was sired and left and has been breaking all of the rules that Mick goes after. I really wanted to show the two opposing views of being a vampire: Mick's one, that they need the rules in place, and then that of the doctor's who just feels free and blood-thirsty and is against the rules, so I went with a lot of opposing colours here, white vs. black, dark background light foreground, and colouring with cold and warm hints. Not my best piece ever, I just threw it together quickly, but I hope it shows what I was going for.

Thoughts:
Well, well, well...you finally got me to do a piece I've been wanting to do for almost, how long has it been? 2 years? My god. I actually tried to get this piece done for the Daddy Issues challenge, but I've always had such a hard time with it. Anywiggle, this entry is from episode 2.07 of VM (Nobody Puts Baby in a Corner). It is one of my favorite scenes ever, when Veronica and Duncan break into the Manning house to figure out who the abused kid was. I stuck it in the Authority figure category because it's one of my favorite Lamb scenes. As much as I love that corrupt cop thing, I especially love him here because he's not abusing his power just to be an ass. He lets those two go because he really believes he's doing the right thing and he's putting Mr. Manning in his place. Plus, we get a little hint about his past (though I always wish we would have gotten more).

Even though this scene always makes me a little happy, it's still pretty dark, so I wanted the piece to be completely unlike what I usually do. For instance, hello screencaps! And dark colors, less brushwork...I kind of let it become more about Veronica, because she fit so nicely in the middle as the focus of the piece. But I like the effect we get of Lamb driving away, because he and V are *kind of* on the same side at this one point, but still...not. Aaaannddd...I managed to avoid sticking Donut in my piece. A big cap at least. He's still in the small ones :lol:

OKay here is my first entry, it's for the Authority Figures category. In the Gift, Buffy is clouded by her love for Dawn, and stands up to Giles saying "we're not talking about this." Giles, in one of his finest moments, shows his authority over Buffy by stating the facts to her.

My piece is about how General Voll and Buffy are both vying for dominance over each other. Voll feels that he's totally in command over the "girl" (understandably so given his position in the military), however, Buffy is also a commander of an army now and has every right to feel equal, if not superior, to him. She's prepared for a fight, and entirely willing to "show him what a slayer is". I loved both of their "hard arsed" stares in these images.

Entry 1: Rebellion (Category Three)

I came up with this idea because Australia just aired the last episodes of Alias (about a year late!). Despite being somewhat disappointed by the final episode, I really liked the episode before it. The character of Marshall has pretty much always been side-lined through out the series. He was pretty much an exposition device and comic relief. You could call him the 'Xander' of Alias, but even Xander got his plots. While his character shone briefly when he had to rescue Sydney from being buried alive, he was never part of the larger plot.

But in this scene, you get to see Marshall's character perfectly. He shows his strength, loyalty and courage by rebelling against a man that has been his superior for years. Despite being tortured for hours and knowing full well he is likely to be killed, he refuses to help Sloane. In this moment you can see why Marshall is such a brilliant and awesome character.

Ok, so I haven't made any walls in ages, so this is my first attempt back into the wonderful world of fanart...ala Supernatural...:xd Everyone knows that Sam and Dean are the world's biggest rebels...even though they are fighting on the side of good. Soooo, my entry falls into Category 3: Rebels.

About the art:
I tried to make this look rugged - like the outlaws from the wild, wild west...so I used a lot of motion blurring and grainyness to give it that weather-beaten look. I'm putting it in spoiler tags because keeping in the rebel spirit that I'm trying to capture, I used some diiiiirrrrrty language....:redshy:
