Challenge 40: The Seven Heavenly Virtues

Yay:2party:, my first challenge!!
Well, the title kinda sums it up, I want you to do a piece focusing about one of the seven heavenly virtues which are: Faith, Hope, Charity, Fortitude, Justice, Prudence and Temperance. Let's introduce them:

1. Faith is belief in the right things.
2. Hope is taking a positive future view, that good will prevail.
3. Charity is concern for, and active helping of, others.
4. Fortitude is emotional strenght.
5. Justice is taking a decision to do what’s right or seems right.
6. Prudence is care, protection and self-protection.
7. Temperance is moderation of needed things and abstinence from things which are not needed

Rules
Fandoms: Absolutely every single TV show or movie on Earth, but I won't accept promo caps because obviously it doesn't fit with the challenge. I have no problem with the fact that you enter old pieces.
Entries: 7 max, one for every virtue which would be really cool, but if you only have time for one, it's okay too.
Size: Of course the 800x600 and 1024x768, and I encourage wallscrolls and unregular sized art too.

Okay, the first thing that caught my eye when I read the challenge was "Temperance is moderation of needed things and abstinence from things which are not needed"

It reminded me of Faith's line in Revelations where she retorts to Buffy "Yeah, it's real Spartan." Faith has never needed much in the way of posessions or a nice place to stay, or even an excess of clothes or really anything in the way of "things." It does show the character of a true warrior in her.

Okay for my second entry, I feel that when Buffy knew she had to kill Anya despite the fact that she was her friend, she was doing what she knew was right, regardless of what anyone else might think.

Alright, this was my first art attempt since my accident and I've been re-watching the last two seasons of Buffy in my down time, so this was made before I looked at the challenge. :err: But that's okay, because it fits right in! This is when Angel appears at the end of "End of Days", both saving Buffy in that moment with Caleb when it's not looking too hot in her favor as well as giving her the amulet, which essentially saves them all in the end, so there are a few interpretations of this as far as charity.

Looking at fortitude, it reminded me instantly of this scene between Buffy and Spike when they both admit how much their night together in 'Touched' meant to each other. During Season 7, these two had a lot of lovely moments, just subtle and precious. It's funny how one's view changes over the years... :lol: The emotional strength was given to each other and received equally, in that Spike reignited the passion in Buffy and that she reassured her feelings for him. I also saw that you wanted some irregular sizes, so I went a little crazy and made a super mini-wallscroll, :p.

Entry Three: We're Going To Win

Oh, I'm on a roll with Season Seven, oh yes I am. :p A great moment of hope, and better yet, realizing that things are going to turn out for the best for the good side. I love when Buffy accepts what the First says and, in a way, uses what the First says to give her the idea of turning every potential into the Slayer, or better said, a Slayer. And also, a great chance to use some new stocks. Yay, happiness. I've also been feeling the lack of inspiration with text, so I went a little crazy and tried some new things.

Entry One; Faith: Reason
I am planning on seven entries for Charmed, I have figured out an episode/scene for each virtue, so if I have the time I will be making seven cause I love this challenge.
For my first entry, 'Faith', I went with the death of Prue and the arrival of Paige. Everyone on Charmed beleives in "Everything Happens For A Reason" so I thought it was like faith and they needed this faith to survive Prue's death and bringing back the Charmed Ones.

Ok So this seems so obvious, I used Prue for the virtue pruedence not only is it her name but she was about protection and was always protecting her and her sisters, and of cource the rest of the world.

Category: Prudence

This reminded me of when Angel returned in Season 3 and how Buffy cares/protects him. There is a whole lot of protecting going on - Buffy protecting herself from Angel (is he still Angelus?), her protecting Angel from her friends (will they kill him?) and Buffy protecting herself from her friends (what will they say?) anyway hope it's suitable.

Entry Two
Category: Justice/With maybe a bit of Prudence thrown in

I thought Giles killling Ben was an example of this. He knows that Ben needs to be killed to make sure Glory doesn't use him to come back. As Ben is still human he knows Buffy won't killl him as he is an innocent so he decides too do it to save/protect Buffy from the pain of taking a human life (that's where I think the Prudence bit comes in) As usual I'm probably WAY off base but it sounded okay in my head.

I chose Justice. And based on the definition supplied I came up with this from the Bones episode "Stagrazer in a Puddle."

So, a little explanation. Brennan has discovered that this mother killed her daughter. But the daughter had an aging disease and a mental capacity of age six. The mother had AIDS and was getting too weak to care for her. Because of the daughter's circumstance, her mother knew she would never end up in a foster family and would only be institutionalized and she saw that as no good life for her daughter. After a slight family drama of her own, Brennan realizes that the mother was trying to do right by the daughter and brings the mother some drawings she asked for. I think Brennan feels as though she should acknowledge to the mother that she has some compassion for her, that she made a wrong decision but that she understands it. She loved her daughter.

Explanation of the art:

My entry is based on the pilot of the TV series Roswell. This show was based on 3 teen-aged aliens who were sent to earth as children to save their race. Max, the main character, possesses the ability to heal. In the pilot the girl in which he had a crush on, Liz, is shot and would have died but Max saved her life by healing her while at the same time putting himself at risk by exposing his abilities.

Really loved these particular moments when Buffy was defeated by the Uber Vamp, when everyone doubted that they could overcome, only to have Buffy stage the fight at the construction zone to triumph. It was a great moment that really made you remember why you loved the show. One minute your down, the next your back on top of the world.

Entry Two; Hope: Keep Holding On
My second entry with the Charmed series. I wanted to use the scene from "Morality Bites" in which Phoebe comes to the revelation that her future self must die in hope of giving future witches safety from witch hunts. Although Prue and Piper don't get it, Phoebe has hope.
I couldn't figure out how the piece was to work. I did a blend version, but it was so dull... So I did this. I've wanted to do something like this for awhile but could never pull it off. I dunno if it worked or not, but I think it stands out and captures the scene.
I'm also listening to Avril Lavigne 'The Best Damn Thing', so tiss why I picked the lyrics. Which I may go back and edit...

First Entry : Justice

I chose this scene of BTVS 7th season because I love how Buffy decides to take Spike's "side" instead of Woods' since she has to think about her mission first :) Like she says : "The mission is what matters".

I also love the connection between Buffy's choice and the one Woods' mother took back then. A slayer's a slayer :) They have to do everything to keep the world @ peace :)

It took me a while to think of something for temperence and I am rewatching the third season and then there was 'Anne', the scene where Buffy is sitting in her meager apartment, with her can of food, just staring into space. This is a moment showing both her lack of needing many things to survive as well as her emotional moderation of needed things, cutting her feelings off to live.

I originally blended this entry for the faith virtue, but this scene was definitely more about decisions, especially about Faith's decision to turn herself in, because she knew that it was the right thing to do, the thing that she needed to do in order to redeem herself, both in her eyes as well as everyone else. Another major decision is about doing it legally, the slow way, through human law. I wanted to show the moment when she is in the cell, content with her decision and ready to face what's coming at her.

My art, is based on the final episode of Heroes and more exclusively on a conversation between Claire and her biological father and grandmother. Angela and Nathan believe that the Peter blowing up and killing half on New York is inevitable, and nothing, no matter how much they would like to believe other wise, will stop him.. This piece focuses on Claire, and how she thinks that no matter how inevitable something is, nothing is for sure, and you have to keep fighting for what is right even in the absence of hope. She has faith that good will triumph and NY will be saved.

Entry Three
Fortitude

This is based on the episode Grave where Xander tries to stop Willow from destroying the world. Willow is so far gone with the magic that she cannot feel anything anymore except vengence. Xander shows her that it doesn't matter what she does, he will always love her. He tries to get through to her emotions by reminding her of their past together. This gives her the strength to let go of the magic.

Entry Three; Charity: Safer World
Ohh, another one from me with Charmed. Now after Piper gives birth, everyone is after her child, so Paige goes and tries to protect the baby by killing the demons and all, but it back fires. But its the concern that Paige has and the "I'll do anything to help" persistince that I feel makes this scene/episode really fit in Charity for Paige's character.

This put me in mind of Angel in Becoming. After being cursed with a soul he wanders the streets, not being part of the world. He knows no friendship, no companionship, he feeds on rats to survive. He's also a bit smelly too!. Tried something a bit different with this...not sure if it worked:(

This is a folllow on from the temperance one. Whistler shows up and offers Angel a bit of hope. He tells him he can be someone worthwhile, a part of society and it's also a chance to redeem himself for his past. Whistler shows him Buffy...and tells him she is going to need help. Everyone knows the rest!

This reminded me of the scene in Never Leave Me when Buffy tells Spike that she believes in him. The First has been manipulating Spike into thinking he has been killing again. Buffy lets him know that she has seen the change in him, that he is a better man, and knows that he isn't killing people.

So, this could fit in both faith as well as prudence, but I designed it to be more about Buffy protecting Angel from himself, from what the First brought out in him. While in actuality it is the snow that saves him, it's Buffy's intentions that I wanted to show, that she sincerely didn't want him to die, as well as make him realize that he's a doof for playing into the First's hands, while he knows she's right about fighting, not giving in and taking his part in his destiny.

I recently watched "Houses of the Holy" and I think it perfectly fits with "Faith" since Sam deeply wants to believe in something good that'll be watching over him. The scene is also really beautiful :)

Charlie was a heroin addict and when he crashed on the island he discovered a load of heroin in another crashed plane and it was hidden in Virgin Mary statues. He hoards and hides them until finally one day he decides he must let them go and throws them into the ocean.

explanation
This entry is about Buffy and Dawn in "The Gift". I allways loved that episode and know it by heart. It's not actually the part where Buffy jumps to save Dawn it's before that when she and Giles have a fight. That scene allways touched me, the way she protects Dawn, no matter what.. even if it means that the world will end and her friends will die, she is still convinced on saving dawn.

About:

For any non-Dark-Angel-viewers, Max was created and put into a surrogate mother and from the moment she was born she was brought up in a government facility intent on turning her into a soldier. I basically wanted to show an image of Max as a child looking out of the window and seeing a better future ahead of her, and where she's going to be later in life. I wanted to show Max's hope as she stares longingly out of this shattered world into a different future. Hope that makes sense.

The cap placement is really clever with a good use of lights, the font used and the banner-like for the text is great. From what I've seen, this is your best piece ever debbiefm.

In fact I loved your two pieces for Faith and Hope, this one (Hope) cause it's really stylish, maybe a bit bigger would have been better, but great fonts, and the Faith one, again with the stylish, good lights and colors with a successful boxy style and texturing.

First for the colors and for the idea behind, gathering girl Sam and woman Sam was great with the two watching themselves, great font and backgrounds.

The blending is flawless, amazing construction of the piece with brilliant cap choice, with the suiting colors, it brings a dirty, violent aspect which is great with those scenes you choose. Beautiful work.

So harsh with a lot of caps, all very good blended, punchy dark colors, the use of black is amazing, great color and lights effects, great fonts, I always considered dead Things as the darker episode of BtVS, this is an amazing vizualisation of it.

Just amazing, again, an amazing choice and placement of the caps, it really gives a dreamy style to the piece, amazing use of lights, contrast and colors, I love the (I don't know how to say it) "doodles" on the scooby heads, the font is great, the all piece is really dynamic, deep, powerful.
