CHALLENGE 39 - CRISIS OF FAITH

A lot of characters in tv shows and/or movies come to a point in their lives, where the burdens and sacrifices life throws at them become just one too many and they buckle under the pressure. They loose the faith in their ability to make the right choices, they doubt their path in life, their destiny, they loose trust in the people they rely upon, in themselves or god. As a result they resign, stumble into depression, give up, doubt everything and everybody.

I want you to capture one of those moments in your artwork for this challenge. I want emotions, people, I want tears and hand-wringing and despair and anger/frustration. :D You can interpret the prompt as loosely as you like, but you can't just pick any sad moment, it has to mark a moment where the very core of who and what that character is, is shaken to its foundations. If you can pinpoint a specific event/moment that causes the crisis for the character I'd like you to incorporate that event in the art.

For overachievers and people who find the motivation and time for it, I'd like you to make 2 wallpapers, one that deals with the crisis itself and the 2nd deals with how the character overcomes the crisis (or doesn't overcome it, if that's the case) or alternatively make a wallscroll, that captures the whole process from being thrown into the crisis to the resolution of it. This is no requirement for this challenge! If there are enough entries for this expansion of the theme, I'll make extra awards for this category.

Fandoms: Free for all fandoms of the tv and movie variety, just add an explanation. ;)
Entries: You can make as many entries as you like and feel inspired for. Add them as they come or edit your posts, whatever you like best.
Deadline: Saturday, October 13th

Have fun and may the muses be with you! If you have any questions, just PM me! ;)

oooh, ok, so I'm the first one...:p

Very great challenge idea :) When I read it I isntantly thought of Buffy's breakdown at the end of Dead Things, thus I created this:

About the art:

I wanted to make a peice that truly captured Buffy's turmoil. She'd sunk into a deep dark depression since coming back from heaven with 'everything being cold and hard'. I tried to depict this using a fair amount of negative space in the art. At this moment Buffy learns that she's completely normal and it broke her resolve. When Spike hit her in Smashed something clicked on in her brain that gave her a backwards kind of hope. That she didn't come back completely human, that there was something wrong with her. This screwy belief allowed her the freedom to go with her feelings. To sink into the darkness with Spike and to behave as depraved as he was. When Tara told her in this scene that she came back just fine, Buffy could not deal with all of the vile things she had been doing - knowing that it was truly HER that did them. I tried to show Buffy's anguish and self-loathing through the pictures I chose. I debated on whether I wanted to add any text or not, because I truly wanted the picture to paint a thousand words. In the end I decided to add the line 'please don't forgive me' very subtly in the lower corner.

I thought a lot about what fandom I wanted to pursue and about what characters fit the bill. Then I just realized that Angel is like the best example of this challenge idea, imo. Season two is really fantastic (for the most part) and has a great series of eps that deal with him losing himself and abandoning his calling.

I decided to make this arc in one art, instead of two. SO I used an irregular sized canvas and made an honest to good blended collage, complete with images and quotes from throughout the arc. I spent all day on this--which surprises me because it doesn't look stylistically different from anything else I have done--I just took my time on it because it felt like a special piece to me. This is a wonderful challenge concept and I love the ones that really make me excited about something I work on. :) :)

I made a Doctor Who piece. It's of a scene where The Doctor believes he has lost Rose and that she's dead. and he kind of just freezes and goes quiet and doesn't do anything. Which is VERY unlike him as he's always trying to solve everything. So it was definitely a moment where he had lost hope. He was just starting to recover from losing his entire race and then he loses his best friend (and also woman he loves) and he kind of just stops. :(

I recently bought 'Big Love' season 1 on DVD, and well when I read this challenge I was inspired by the character of Sarah, the eldest daughter. For those who don't know, Big Love is a series about a polygimist family living in the suburbs. Its a pretty kick ass show.

Sarah has had to live alot in secrets and lies as she can't let anyone know what her family really is (laws and such) so she hides and surpresses everything until she decides to go out get drunk/high/sick off cough syrup and pretty much crashes under all the stress going on with her family.

I also havn't seen much Big Love art and really wanted to do one. And this is from episode four "Eclipse".

Okay I chose to redo an old piece of mine because I had been meaning to for some time, and it really fit the criteria of the challenge.

http://www.hideous-beauty.com/wallpapers/episodes/thegiftchoices2.jpg

Okay, I have made my followup with the resolution of Buffy's crisis. She realized at the end of the episode why death was her gift, what it means, and what she was meant to do for the world. She sums it up best when she tells Dawn "this is the work I have to do." I kept it in sort of the same color scheme and darkness because it is a companion piece.

Ok, I might of picked the most obvious one and I thought someone else might of done this but they haven't so nevermind, this is buffys breakdown at then of season 5 when dawn got captured by Glory, Its a wallscroll showing what i thought is the reasons why she broke down, all the things that got on top of her and it was too much for her so she brokedown.

Same credits, except for the text, which is mostly from the episodes Blood Ties and The Gift and a little bit of my own. Not too pleased with this one, especially the bottom fourth, but couldn't do much about it.

These were both about Buffy's issues about who she really is, and whether she has to follow her "destiny" - which at that point seems to be killing the ones she loves. The crisis is thinking that maybe she is a murderer, maybe she has to shut herself off and not love properly, or kill the ones she loves; maybe it's her destiny, her role in life, and she has to fulfill it. The "I don't see the point" quote is part of the solution for me because it shows how Buffy rebels against that worldview - some people (Dawn) are more valuable to her than doing her "Slayer duties" because without them, the world is empty to her.

I picked this scene cause it shows Angel at a breaking point. He has lost all faith and hope in himself. He thinks he is nothing but a waste and that he will only harm others.

Superb idea for a challenge:) When I seen it I first thought of Buffy in Prophecy Girl but now I 'm not so sure about it (I've spent all week on it)but I suppose someone will let me know if it doesn't fit the requirement. And I've also given it a crappy name..I call it The Prophecy Trilogy....corny or what:)

In this episode Buffy has to deal with her mortality for the first time. She knows the drill about one slayer dies yadda yadda but I think she never truly faced the fact that one day she will die. Eventually she overcomes this fear and realises that she must face the master to ensure he doesn't open the Hellmouth and end the world. I've made it in three parts (would have been soo much easier doing a wallscroll, but I've never attempted one.....but having spent all week on these three I probably would have been quicker doing the wallscroll)

Part One - I Quit
This deals with Buffy overhearing Giles and Angel talking and hears for the first time that she will face the Master and die.

Here goes... my first entry into a challenge. The first thing that came to me was, well, Faith... I'm surprised to see no-one else yet has Faith, but to me the point at which she so badly wants Angel to kill her is her lowest point at which she really has no idea if she's good, bad or what she wants to be. She just wants out.

Great challenge honey

Finally managed to finish my entry for it!

This is Wesley and his crisis of Faith when he discovers the prophecy about Angel killing Connor. I wanted to have what he thinks Angel will do on one side and Angel's enemy on the other to show how stuck he is. The lyrics help get across how alone he is in this place.

I finally found some inspiration for this challenge (well I had loads but wanted to choose an unusual subject, a change for me!) in the film "What's Love Got to do With It?" the biography of Tina Turner and her life with Ike Turner.

Explanation
Tina (actually Anna-Mae) was a very shy girl although she had this amazing voice. Ike Turner recognised her talent and competely manipulated her to ensure he got as much fame and money as her talent would allow. He was very violent with her and this scene is from when she has beaten to a pulp, just before a show. Looking at herself in the mirror, she realises how manipulated she's been, and how she's allowed herself to get into this situation. It is this moment when she's at her lowest and forces her to act i.e. leave Ike and put herself into the trust of strangers.

I was afraid I wouldn't get a chance to enter in this challenge! Because yes, amazing challenge. Angst, grief, so much morality and humility... As for my entry, I wanted to show the end of the second season of Supernatural after Sam was stabbed and how Dean just wanted to give up, and rightly so! This was a great moment between he and Bobby when he says just let the world end, he doesn't care, that he's given enough and he's done, with it all. He doesn't believe in the fight against evil because of the prices he's had to pay, and this is where it all comes to a head. And I just love this episode. :p

I finally thought of something else. I fail at not realizing it sooner. I chose the moment in Serenity (the ep) where Mal literally loses his faith in God as he believes his fellow soldiers are coming in to save them but they pull out and are forced to surrender Serenity Valley. Just the look on his face is... ugh. Makes me sad just thinking about it.

First Entry : Please help me

Ok I hope this fits the challenge :)

A lot of great scenes were already taken but I managed to find one that always touched me deeply.

I chose the moment in "Wrecked" (Btvs s6) when Willow broke in tears after the car accident with Dawn. She's so broken and she's stuck in a hole that she digged herself, and while she was trying to escape from it she just made it worst. There's a desperation in that scene that is incredible, that and the fact that Alyson is one hell of an actress ! ;)

This is from Lost and it is the moment that Sawyer comes face to face with the real Sawyer, the con man who was responsible for his parent's death when he was a child. He adopted the man's man and has been seeking revenge ever since. He wanted to kill the man and even at one point, killed an innocent he was duped into believing was the right man. Sawyer tries to talk with him and make him read a letter he wrote to him when he was a child but the man just doesn't care and Sawyer loses it and strangles him dead. Before this event, he was beginning to make a change for the positive on the island but this just makes him retreat further into himself. He believes himself to be a bad man and loses what little faith he had himself prior to this murder.

Okay, my (very late) entry for this challenge is from episode 1 of season three Supernatural and so is behind the tags below:

Twisted & Broken

Size: 1024x768 (http://left-unspoken.net/radiance/walls/supernatural/301-02-1024.jpg) 800x600 (http://left-unspoken.net/radiance/walls/supernatural/301-02-800.jpg)

Explanation: Okay, basically I loved the scene at the end of episode where Sam realises exactly what the deal is that Dean made, and in that moment he comes to terms with why Dean isn't fighting it. Up until this point Sam has been trying to find a way to get Dean out of the deal and in this moment he realises that he may have to suffer what Dean went through, and in this moment he completely loses faith in Dean, and is angry with him for being selfish and a hypocrit. So I really wanted to show this moment, with Sam glaring at Dean and chasing after him, with the speech he made in the episode, and then have Dean looking back long the raod they've come from and what he went through, to mirror what he's forcing Sam to go through by making the deal. So I really wanted to capture what Dean had done to Sam in the midst of Sam's anger and hurt at Dean. I really hope that a) makes sense and b) comes across in the piece. I made it really quickly to get it in for this challenge, so it probably could have been better, but nevermind!

My Last Minute Entry
Fab challenge! Can't say I'll say the same for my entry, but I'll post it anyway seeing as I don't have time to do another :(

So, I chose this scene because here Denny has just died and Izzie's beyond sad. Here she quits her job, saying she's not a surgeon. Essentially, she doesn't think she has what it takes to do the job, doubting everything she's worked for. If that's not a crisis I don't know what is ;)

Yay! I think I've made this in time! I wanted to make a series of panels rather than just do a wallscroll since I like to have wallpapers. :xd I started on this as soon as I heard about your challenge, but since I've had some problems I didn't get to do all the panels I wanted. This song has been haunting me for about 8 months so I wasn't going to let such a perfect opportunity to do something with it get away from me. Hopefully I can do the rest of it at a later time.

Brief Description: I loved this scene from WIAWSNB where Dean is able to convey so much emotion with only his father's grave to converse with. The first panel is him wanting his hero to help him. The second is about how he thinks that putting all this pain and suffering upon himself is honoring his dad. The third is about him realizing that no matter what he does, what wishes he makes, Dad will always be dead.

The final one is him moving on from this point. Although he knows he is leaving something of himself behind, he realizes that sooner if not later he'll get that part back.

Concept:

http://www.misplaced.co.uk/saltnburn/images/conceptdebbiefm.jpg
When I created this challenge, Buffy in Prophecy Girl was one of the first episodes that came to my mind, so I was delighted that you picked up that theme. I really liked how you showed Buffy’s progression from desperation and rejection of her status as slayer in the face of the sacrifice she is asked to make, to acceptance and overcoming the crisis by facing her fears head on. As a tip: I know that the image quality of BtVS S1 caps isn’t great, therefore it might prove more effective to size the caps down more and instead of trying to blend a whole canvas only use a part of it. That way you can aim for sharper image quality. ;)

http://www.misplaced.co.uk/saltnburn/images/conceptjenni.jpg
This award is for your AtS entry! The concept of showing a complex theme like Angels journey of doubt in himself and loosing faith in his mission in S2 on one huge canvas, without loosing the overview really impressed me. I love how you worked with the text here and the various highlights that scatter throughout the piece look lovely. The only thing that disrupts the piece for me is the heavy red gradient, that swallows a lot of details on facial expressions and overall darkens it down too much.

Emotion:

http://www.misplaced.co.uk/saltnburn/images/emotionbre.jpg
Oh my, Dean’s anguish in AHBL II is a perfect theme for this challenge, he literally gives up on the world after he looses Sam and I love how you captured his emotions here, when he takes his grief out on Bobby. I especially love how you worked the text in this piece and how his anger seems to rip the canvas (the world) apart. Lovely work, hon!

http://www.misplaced.co.uk/saltnburn/images/emotionlrae.jpg
Geesh, you really found the perfect caps to depict Buffy’s desperation in this piece, sometimes a single image says more than thousand words, her anguish is really tangible in this wallpaper. I love how you added the cap of Tara and Buffy, I always loved Tara’s quiet conviction and reassurance she gives in that scene and it builds a serene contrast to Buffy’s overwhelming emotions here.

5th Place:

http://www.misplaced.co.uk/saltnburn/images/5thnikki.jpg
Wesley being torn between his faith in Angel and the doubts that Holtz plants in him is an excellent theme for this challenge. I love how you have Wes between Angel and Holtz here and that you added the prophecy, because in the end it is Wes’ blind belief in the unchangeable truth of destiny and auguries that cement his downfall. I love the warm colours and the textwork is beautiful!

4th Place:

http://www.misplaced.co.uk/saltnburn/images/4thamber.jpg
You have come so far in your art in the last couple of months, it’s amazing. I really admire the two pieces you created for this challenge, fitting theme and excellent execution. I love how you work with different perspectives to seamlessly blend the images together and the lighting in both pieces is great. I love especially how you work with your text here, the way you use different fonts and fontsizes to handle the text is great and it looks like an integral artistic part of the piece (esp. in the 2nd one), rather than an afterthought. Well done!

3rd Place:

http://www.misplaced.co.uk/saltnburn/images/3rdmarilyne.jpg
This piece expresses so much raw emotions, it’s amazing! The gritty texturing, the scratches and the intense colours enhance the emotions considerably without ever taking away from the images. That’s beautifully done and I really stared at this wall for quite a while. The only thing I would suggest is to add the neckline/shoulders to the main image of Willow so that the smaller image of Willow lying on the street doesn’t directly blend into the chin. Other than that it’s fantastic!

2nd Place:

http://www.misplaced.co.uk/saltnburn/images/2ndsj.jpg
I am totally in love with the artistic concept of this piece, although I interpret the scene itself a bit differently. You have basically 2 levels in this artwork, firstly Dean tailspinning which is connected to his loss in faith in John and the 2nd level transfers the exact same anguish to Sam and his loss in faith in Dean. I love these kinds of mirrors and parallels in SN. I love how the road adds a structuring element as well as symbolic one in this piece. My only point of critique would be the text. Your way to display text is usually a bit more sophisticated, it looks a bit too bleak here, but maybe that was your intention. ;)

1st Place:

http://www.misplaced.co.uk/saltnburn/images/1stlyn.jpg
Oh my, where to begin! I totally adore this concept of dissecting a single scene into different panels, interconnected via the text and progressing a realisation process. Marvellous! The lighting in all four pieces is wonderful and each has a distinct colouring, transporting the sentiment behind the thought. My favourite of the pieces is ‘I’ll join you’. Dean looking forward to leave his burdens behind and join his father in death is heart-wrenching and at the same time John looming over the piece has at the same time something protective and something wistful. That overhead image of Dean walking along the gravestones always hits me as so incredibly appropriate and poignant for Dean’s life, I love how you use it here.

:hf2::bounce: :happydance: OMG words cannot express how chuffed I am with the award....it's beautiful. I really enjoyed this challenge. Thanks for the tip.....it took my ages to do the three walls as the quality of the caps wasn't very good and I'm not very good at improving them:)

Again thanks for the award Galathea:hug:

Oops! meant to congratulate all the other winners and amazing entries by everyone
