View Full Version : Ripper begins filming next summer
So last night I was watching the station G4 and at the bottom, they always have news stuff popping up. And then something caught my eye, it suddenly came up and said "Ripper, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer spinoff begins filming next summer." I don't know if anyone's heard about this yet, but I looked and found a news article from a few days ago confirming that they are going ahead with filming they don't have a script yet, but Joss has confirmed that there is a story.

Oooh. I heard about this! I'm not sure if it was here or in the israely forum of Buffy... But I think it's awesome! I was very disapointed that they didn't do a spinoff for one of the charecters in the end of the show. like Faith... And I heard to do a spinoff for Giles but it wasn't a go. Also it's not actually a tv series. it's a tv movie. at least that's what I've heard

Yeah i remember reading it was going to be a movie, not a tv series. This is still great news, i hope it happens :D

Yup it is basically happening :)
At this years ComicCon announced it to his fans that he plans to begin filming next year and that both the BBC and Head are on board. All they need is Fox's approval and the thing is basically certain to happen. It will be shot in the UK, produced by the BBC as a tv movie which will air first in the UK then will air in the US and other countries after. It will centre around Giles but that is all we know :)
My question is, is joss the one who's gonna to write the script?
And I really hope it won't be another canceled project like the Spike tv movie...

OMG! I'm so exited!...I think if it does Spike may be likely to be in it. Since James is closer (than most) to Antony and James probably would more than willing, in asked by Joss...not meantion the fact that he brings in a lot of fans. Pluss he has been in cardiff alot lately. I'm sure he enjoys hanging in England LOL.
Eliza-Might be a candidate but I'm just hoping. Anyways I'm getting all exited and ahead of myself.
(this is my personal opinion. Nothing to do with anything)

So it will be starring ASH then? In that case, is it a movie about his past (when he was Ripper) or does it take place post-Chosen, but with the name "Ripper" to be catchy and cool-sounding? Or will it be present!Giles thinking back on his past in flashbacks.
(EDIT: Okay, just read the article, and I'm still a little confused--how will Giles have time to be solving paranormal mysteries? Isn't he involved in battles in the season 8 comics? And I still don't see where Angel would come in (even if he could film outside of Bones--though seeing DB in Bones is enough for me), when last we see is of Giles mistrusting Angel because of WH. Would this series just be entertainment outside of canon?)
And sometimeslola, why do you think Spike would be in it? I do adore the interactions between them (my two fave characters on Buffy), those members of the Nancy Tribe, lol, but I can't see how Spike would come into the picture--he wasn't involved in Giles's past (as seen by his ignorance about Spike in SH), and he isn't around Giles post-Chosen.
In any case, it'd be good to see my beloved Giles back in action once more, lol, though I don't know if the story intrigues me so much yet.

No one is quite sure yet, some have speculated that we may have some flashbacks but it does apparent it will be the Giles we've come to know and love. It is set in England so that could mean it is supposed to take place during s6 of Buffy after he went back to England, it could have been early on in s7 or in the year and a half we missed between season seven and season eight. I think that would likely be the case as this would be the only time Buffy could make an appearence logically, though AH did say the movie doesn't depend on a cameo from her or DB.

Perhaps his mistrust could be an issue dealt with in the movie? Perhaps Angel has a past with whatever paranormal thing Giles is dealing with, perhaps we have a flashback of Angelus or even just a reluctant phone call between the two, there could be many possibilities. :)

Yeah I don't think JM has been considered or AH would have probably mentioned him. The fact he has mentioned both SMG and DB specifically probably indicates that this is something he and Joss has spoken about. SMG always said if the script was good she'd come back for a reunion with the character of Angel because of Bangel and offered to make cameos in Ats during s5 so I could see it really happening. Though it obviously wouldn't be too Bangel centric as this is Giles' story.
In any case, it'd be good to see my beloved Giles back in action once more, lol, though I don't know if the story intrigues me so much yet.
I can't wait to see Giles again, it will be amazing to see a Buffy character in a new story back on our screens again. It is so weird, the verse kind of went dead in terms of anything really new for a couple of years and suddenly Joss is totally invested in it again and we have Buffy s8, Ats s6, a new Fray Comic, a confirmed Buffy s9 and now Ripper! :2party:

Well. I was just wish-thinking-If that makes sense. Well, I'll like send a email to Steven and ask, see if there is any answer but anyways...JM and ASH are good mates and regularly talk or at least more often than most. I think if this Movie is going to happen JM would know...but as for him being on it...I dunno, not many BvS or AtS characters are free...I mean they otta bring more of them in to make it that much more interesting...I figured JM would be more willing.
Although I don't mind if being only Giles. I don't think it's going to be too much based on the past...Spike, can be dropped in anyplace...If the need be. ..or he could be a kept surprise. Lol…
...well. I'm simply hoping he does and if ever asked he is likely to go for it. I just HOPE it happens. It’s likely that it might not…but…then…again…dunno.

Yes it is!! It is soo great to hear that. "Ripper, We'll be watching you":D
Great news. Looks like this project might really be happening, after all. :)
Didn't Anthony say that David or Sarah may be making an appearance? That indicates to me that they'll be using one or the other for a specific role within the plot (and/or to attract more BtvS/AtS fans). I somehow doubt we'll be seeing them together; according to Season 8, Angel is not part of Buffy's post-"Chosen" life, and you can't suddenly involve him without pissing off a certain other fraction of fans. Besides, Angel/Buffy, Spike/Buffy or Angel/Buffy/Spike -- delighted though I'd be to see them -- would probably detract from the main character of Giles.

The timeline is a little unclear though. We don't know exactly when this will be taking place so it is hard to say about Buffy or Angel making an appearence together. I agree that it shouldn't detract from Giles and the storyline though, but I think even a cameo over the phone would be a nice little touch.
I wouldn't mind an entirely prequel story, rather than trying to patch it in with Season 8. Although they might need some anti-wrinkle cream for Tony if they went like that though!

I wonder if they are going to do it the way they’re doing the Magneto film. With Anthony Head narrating it and a younger person playing young Giles… I hope and pray they don’t try to use special effects. Lol. Either way, *squee’s with excitement*
I hope this will pave the way for more sequels and such. Or perhaps they will make a TV show continuation of Ripper. That would be cool.
Hmmm, as much as I love Spike, I really wouldn't want him to appear in Ripper, ESPECIALLY if it were a scene from the past. I mean... I hate to say it, but... JM is starting to age a bit too much to be a 20 something vampire. WE all know the immense difference between JM of season 2 Btvs, and season 5 Angel. So I would hope he would steer clear. Ooh but I would love a Bangel cameo especially if it were Btvs based, obviously sometime from season 1-3. Just a nice little appearance to tip their hats to the fans :)
James recently said he thinks he's held up well enough to play Spike again, but I agree that both James and David look very different now than they did in their initial Buffy appearances. (I recall the fans made a big deal out of it with David in the last seasons of Angel, since he had begun to put on some weight.) I hope they steer clear of the Angel/Buffy/Spike triangle altogether, that way lies only disappointment, diversion from Giles's story and fandom outcry.

I agree. This is Ripper, Giles has to be front and centre in this one. We need to find out more about him, his life, his loves, his triumphs and disasters.
although a few well placed cameos would be very welcome just for the nostalgia i think too much shippyness or too many big characters will rob Giles of the limelight too much and stop it being his story.

I can't say the same for James but DB now looks a hell of a lot younger than he has in a long time. He is a lot fitter and slimmer than he has been since s1 of Ats and is actually looking more like he did back in Btvs s1. If you check out Bones you'll see what I mean. If they shaved him I'm sure he could pull it off again. Though admittedly I think James is looking a bit too old, he has a lot of wrinkles on his forehead and around his eyes which he didn't have before, he is like 40 something anyway isn't he? So there is really no surprise there.
But I agree with tangent, give us some cameos and I will be happy, doesn’t have to be shippy but I’d die if SMG came back and did a cameo as Buffy in a scene, even over the phone.

james is 45 and david is 38.
and yes, david has lost a TON of weight. he looks about as thin as he was perhaps in season 2 of btvs... that's thin. as for his face, he just would need to lose the tan and stubble and he'd actually pass for younger than he was at the end of ats, that's for sure. those last 2-3 seasons of ats is when he really started gaining weight and aging. he was also gaining too much muscle that wasn't really compact. there have been a few times where he's had his shirt off in bones that he looks like the same db who stood with his shirt off in "angel" in season 1 btvs! that's how skinny he is now.
unlike james, david hasn't really started to wrinkle (look at his father, dave roberts--his father is 71 and doesn't look wrinkled at all!--and they look like twins). james looks great for his age, but his cheekbones were really sinking in and he was getting wrinkles around the eyes and forehead--he was also a bit too underweight, which gave him an older appearance. david, on the other hand, looks younger now than he did for *at least* the last 3 seasons of ats (though the short hair and extra weight was not helping--when his hair grew out more, his appearance more or less got get better for the time).
if he shaved his stubble, grew out back into the spiky-look and dyed his hair maybe a little darker (his hair is actually a dark blonde/light-medium brown), he could pass for angel, minus a few years.

I for one have been enjoying the pairing of Faith/Giles in the comics! And I love the fanfics where writers pair Giles and Spike together. And if writers for pleasure can make credible sounding leaps in relationships than I'm sure the talents of professional writers can do the same.
This could also be the venue to answer some of the questions about the inconsistancies in the Buffy/Angel TV series and comics. For instance - "Does Buffy know Spike is alive?" and "Does Buffy and Slayer Inc. know about what has happened in Los Angeles with the A-Team and the BIG BATTLE?"
But it may be this takes place before Giles becomes a Watcher for the Council or the creators may not intend to make this "canon" with the other mediums past, present or future.
In regards to them being "older" James recently commented about playing a vampire again. He had initially told Joss when the movie was a possibility not to wait too long because unlike Spike, James would age! However, recently he made the comment that he felt he hadn't aged quite as much as he thought he would and would like to do a screen tape for the look.

i take it back, jm is looking better than he was. i'm thinking he's touching up his eyebrows and hair with some darker dye, though, because his eyebrows weren't quite dark brown (getting rather gray) in seasons 7 btvs and 5 ats--also, when he sheared the blonde, his roots were definitely gray. basically, if he kept darkening the eyebrows, he'd be fine. oddly enough, his classic appearance is more his later one, it seems. his younger one didn't really have the cheekbones standing out quite so much (and his hair was terrible at the start of season 2 btvs). i kind of which they'd change spike's hair to the brown roots with platinum tips again a.k.a. the basement hair. i think it looked better on him.
i think i'd be nice if they did do some jossverse films or shows of any kind, that they'd go more for the matte, pale foundation look. it would make everybody look a little younger and i always liked the look--it added a gothic level that i enjoyed and was missing for the later parts of both shows (and it was definitely needed during the 2002-2003 seasons of both shows, where everyone started seeming splotchy and au naturel). you also have to add in the decrease in makeup which in part was the reason for everybody looking much older suddenly.
as for anthony stewart head... most people didn't even notice him aging, despite his hair going from brown with gray at the temples to completely gray. facially, it seems like he always looked like he was about 50, despite the fact he started btvs at 41!!!
as for a giles movie... giles and faith would be a great combination, though i really think angel and giles need a confrontation for pure storytelling purposes--unresolved issues over jenny calendar and fred, in particular. can you imagine that confrontation?! it'd be amazing drama. if smg or db did cameo, i'd hope it'd be something more like that than just 'hey' on the phone. if anybody did cameo, i'd want it to be for an important reason that brought up issues characters might have. which is why i think db cameoing would be more useful than smg (not a terrible lot of issues there--that would feel like calling giles up to say 'how's it goin'?') if a cameo were to happen, i'd want it to mean something, not just for nostalgia kicks.
and frankly, the last information about giles we did have in the shows was him refusing to help fred and angel smashing his cell-phone over the conversation. it eventually needs to be addressed.

I'm still not going to get all that excited yet about this until I actually see it on the Beebs schedules and casting sides have gone out. Too many things could make it 'fall' at the last minute, especially as the Beebs involved.
I also doubt that many (if at all) other major Buffyverse characters will appear in it somehow, mainly because of the probable budget involved.
Many moons ago when this idea was first banded about by Joss it was described as going to be a kind of 'Cracker' with Ghosts, and really only have ASH and a small cast of original characters involved, and I doubt if thats changed much, but you never know.
Maybe (god help us) Joss will try and crowbar Andrew into the proceedings somehow, but personally I do hope not.
I'd love to see what ASH could do with being given free rein with this concept, as I was a huge fan of his portrayal of the character, and felt that he'd be perfect for any spin off.
Willow's Tara
23-09-07, 05:26 AM
Hmm I would see this especially if Anthony in it, I wonder if anyone at all will appear (You can forgot about Tara/Anya appearing unless they appear as a ghost, I can picture Tara doing it to guide Giles but Anya? Just think about poor Giles, he will probably banish Anya to hell and that's not good), but maybe Willow might make a appeareance sometime down the track 9And she's not a vampire so it's okay for her to look older, just give her a red wig;)).
But I do think that they should set it in a few years ahead instead of right after the finale of Buffy (And hey, by the first/second/third season, if the world isn't destroyed and LA isn't destroyed then we will know whom have won in the end of Angel;))
NileQT87 you crack me up :p I know it seems hard defending DB sometimes, he's totally hot now on Bones, or should I say hotter.
But I hope they really do plan to start filming soon, I haven't heard anything concrete, just web articles, the occasional tv guide one. ASH rocks.

the strange thing about those articles... they make it sound like it's more of a series than a tv movie.
when they talk of him coming out of retirement to battle things... it's not like it's just one big battle, which would make sense for a movie. it's like maybe this "tv movie" is something they are treating like a tv pilot to see how popular it is or something.
the problem is that zombies and such are more one episode kind of deals. a movie would be something along the lines of ethan.
either that or people are so desperate for a tv series rather than just a 90 minute movie, these articles are just assuming it's a series, rather than being about 2 episodes worth... pretty much the equivalent of a 2-parter. unless the bbc are going to see what the reaction is and turn it into a series (which would be ace). the articles aren't very clear or they are assuming things.

I absolutely love you now! lol. I can't agree more with you more. And James is looking a lot younger than most 40year olds. Puss, a little bottox in all the wrinkles, Gym for more Muscles, some hair bleach blond for hair (since blond does make him look younger) Some brow Die (I rely don't think his brow is gray but still just for safety, Some make-up, lighting and touch-ups. We have a ever-young SPIKE!
AS for DB. He does look lovely again. If not better.
Now. don't bite me but I'm shooting out from the dark here and just out sheer wonder. Joss was always rather interested on th Spike/Angel thing. I wonder...if there could be a touch of Spangel. hehehe. some sort of accidental kiss perhaps...or...um...down dirty flirting...Since this is after all TV movie and England...BBC!
Think they might be more tolerant of that stuff. Mean, people are all cool wit the BI/GAY thing. If not more than comfortable with it.
Anways. let be get back to teh point. This IS a GILES movie and ghost or something. So NO chance in hell. EVER. But still. let me dream away about crazy stuff. db and/or smg came back, well if they both did, it would be them coming back to finish the bangel story, as that is pretty much the only reason smg would come back and db would pretty much only come back for a movie (preferably big screen, because he always felt that angel lent itself style-wise to be able to fluidly boost up to that level because the show was already so theatrical).
smg would probably do it for ash, but her favorite reason to come back would be to finish off her character with david/angel.
amy acker, tom lenk, alyson hannigan, etc... would come back in a heartbeat. alexis is frankly almost unemployed besides his wife's show (it's such a shame). james sounds like he'd love to come back, despite his age. you could probably get michelle trachtenberg if you promised her the character would grow up.
perhaps with the way eliza's film career is going right now, joss should bring up the faith spin-off to her again.
as for the spangel thing... not likely. david was already uncomfortable with the holding hands scene. i think the commentary made fun of him for that.
Joss is not going to finish the Bangel story now that Season 8 has just begun. Don't get your hopes up. And if he gets David and Sarah in there (which is highly unlikely, but hypothetically speaking), he'll probably get James, too, for the fans. James would do it in a heartbeat.

I don't think there has been any indication that Joss plans on bringing James in. Anthony was talking about DB or SMG which leads me to believe these are the two people who he and Joss have talked about bringing back.

I really don't think you should get your hopes up too much love, Both of those actors have made it very clear that they would only reprise their rols if it was for a big screen treatment, infact now I come to think about it Gellar has stated in the past that she wouldn't even consider that.
DB and SMG do not come cheap anyway, and I highly doubt that even a BBC co production could afford to use their meager budget on two extra stars like that.
The show would be a Giles centered thing, and I really can't see them upsetting the balance by bring extra 'mainline' Buffyverse starts, including JM.
As to covering unresolved shipping, err, no. I'll really be surprised if that side of things rears it's head in a one off venture such as this.
Oh and don't believe all what you read in press reports either If I were you. Too many times the info in them has been badly misquoted, or twisted to make a more interesting story.

SMG only didn't reprise her role as Buffy in Ats because of conflicting schedules and Whedon saying no for the finale. She was supposed to return for the 100th episode and then in 'TGIQ' but was busy filming 'The Grudge.' She offered to reprise her role for the series finale but Joss thought it would take too much attention away from Angel and the story that needed to be told. So I don't think we should rule out the possiblity of SMG being willing to return for a brief cameo in 'Ripper' if asked by Joss.
Anthony Steward Head said that the plan isn't going to rely on either SMG or DB to make it happen but it has been talked about. The extent of what either of their roles would be is unknown.

That was when the shows were still 'active' love.
Time has moved on now, and so have many of the cast. I know DB gets quite cross with journalists when they talk about his Angel days and whether he'd reprise the role. He really has other concerns now, as do they all.

I'd be equally as angry if they kept talking about my old role when currently playing a new character to, however this doesn't automatically mean he'd never play Angel again. I'd be the first to admit it is a long shot, I think SMG is more likely than DB and she was the one I was actually talking about in my last post. I think there is a chance she would do it, especially now that she has so many other projects I think she would feel that her career isn't based entirley on her role as Buffy Summers.

Nah, I doubt it love. I've worked in film and TV for years, and from what I've gleamed actors like to keep their careers 'fresh' and moving forward in case they become typecast. They only seem to want to reprise old roles if they don't have any other possibilities of new work.
Like I say don't hold your breath eh.

Question: If you see David Boreanaz at the Fox party, ask him if there's any chance of a Buffy-Angel Reunion Movie.
Ausiello: It's been well documented that the Big B detests talking about his vampire past, but I bit the bullet and asked him anyway. Although he didn't come out and say it'll be a cold day in hell before he takes part in such a project, it was heavily (and rather uncomfortably) implied.

I'd forgotten about that quote love. Thanks for that. :)
Actually I happen to have David B and Sarah with me right now...
LOL, not really I just like that bit in Annie Hall ;)
Her latest comment was "stranger things have happened" , and "Never say never" in another article, which I can't find.

Still nothing sounds concrete to me, but I'll be waiting till I'm geriatric :)
I'm actually not really interested in shipper closure anymore, I'd just be happy to have something from the Buffyverse. JM rocks, he's just so agreeable damnit :p DB seemed to be very invested in Angel s5, with commentaries, directing, and actively involved in other ways with the series (in ways SMG hardly ever was), sad that he's turned into a cranky ass.. which seems to be what's happened. I don't know, maybe he's just sick of being pestered by random reporters asking the same questions.

I remember reading an article on an online press report by a journalist who was attending the first launch of Bones.
The first thing he thought was when DB turned up to take questions from them was "*hee* Oh look, there's Angel".
Aww, bless.

"Would you sign on a Buffy movie?"
"I'd prefer an Angel movie. And possibly I would."
apparently there was a new db interview where they asked david about jossverse projects (i'm sure he gets tired of this question while doing bones, but he didn't knock it down!).
it backs up what he said a while back about possibly returning if the bar was raised.
I thought he meant big-screen movies, though, not straight-to-TV movies. At least that's what he'd implied in previous interviews.

and that's what he had said previously--raising the bar to a big-screen movie. but this is certainly a lot more recent that that, so at least he'd still consider it, despite having several years in between.
imo, joss should seriously consider this one.

I'd love to know the date of that quote, and exctly what he said in this latest interview.
Thing is as I said before this is a BBC co production (thats if it ever sees the light of day) and I doubt they could afford DB's salary just for a guest star role.

i'm not sure the salary thing would be all that much of a problem. I mean Extras was a BBC co-production and that managed to land Ben stiller and Samuel L Jackson amongst others.
Personally though i think if there are any cameos they should be kept pretty brief. I think ideally Giles needs to be the father figure to someone to get the best out ofthe character and to me that means new young co-stars who won't take too much focus from Giles himself.

Don't know what I'm doing wrong here but I can't see any indication of a link to said interview.
You say front page, but I must be dim because I can't see that either.
Ben stiller and Samuel L Jackson amongst others.
Thats because they partly did it as a favor for Gervais and partly because they were really big fans of his. I imagine they took a lower fee as Beeb budgets are very small compared to their American counterparts.
For example one episode of Angel would pay for entire season of Dr Who.
*ETA* "Possibly" doesn't really mean a lot really. A comment like that is the standard 'norm' reply for most actors asked questions on camera.

and they actually talked quite extensively about the start of his career. he was remarkably receptive to the buffy/angel questions and talking about the shows--his tone was very positive, i thought.
i love that david knows his "married... with children" appearance is on youtube.

I'll just have to take your word for it love as the page wouldn't load properly for me. Was it a video? I'm on rotten old dial-up and normally can't cope with such things. :(
NileQT87

yes, it's a video. basically taking questions from fans and the interviewer (who seems to be a bit of a fan) on bones, the psychiatrist plot line taking off, when will booth and brennan get together, how the fans all want them to get together (and in bed), his fancy new producer credit, working his personal experiences into the character--the added wardrobe stuff in particular, working with an f.b.i. guy, if he'd do a buffy/angel movie (he prefers the idea of a theatrical angel one more), sports, his first baseball game in 1976 with his dad, a lot of talk about the new york yankees, don't say your a red sox fan when you're in a new york restaurant, his first appearance on married... with children as kelly's biker boyfriend/getting beat up by al bundy--it's on youtube, being discovered walking his dog (and how that actually happened), and how it was through that that his agent got his name to marcia schulman/gail berman, and voilà, got on btvs in the role of angel, etc...
so on the topic of btvs/ats he talked about how he got the part of angel on btvs and the movie question.
i'll transcribe the btvs/ats parts:
Toni: Cassandria from the Bronx wants to know...
David: Cassandria. Ok.
Toni: ...*if* they did another Buffy movie,...
David: Ah!
Toni: ...would you sign on?
David: Uh, Cassandria from the Bronx: if they did another Buffy movie, would I sign on? Uh, I would rather it be an Angel movie, and then I would *possibly* sign on. How's that q... that answer? There you go.
Toni: There you go.
David: Alright.
(about the walking the dog story.)
David: ...And then, literally, before I'd even signed with my manager, he set me up with an interview with Marcia Schulman, who was the head, who's head of casting at 20th Century Fox, who I owe so much to, because she's the one who, and Gail Berman, who put me in the role of Angel on "Buffy", which is this whole cult phenomenon and it was this amazing ride. So there is, there is truth to that story.

Oooh, I'll have to read this interview! (For both the btvs/ats and the Bones tidbits!).
Hoenstly, I think Angel, given it's abrupt ending, would do better having a movie than BTVS would anyway! It could be like Serenity, giving a bit more closure to the show--though they would need to somehow be able to work in Charisma and Alexis--b/c it's not an ATS movie without them!
I can't wait till the Ripper film! I love ASH and Giles was/is one of my favorites.
I would of preffered Faith, but hey, you win some you loose some. I'm happy that there's hope of a Buffyverse project appearing on screens again.
I also would like some Faith, but Giles is cool so.. plus this Ripper thing has been around since season 5. I'm sure other people read this tid bit about Joss working on Ripper, but I'll post the link to it anyway, but
beware of Buffy Issue10 Spoilers!!!:
http://www.darkhorse.com/zones/buffy/editor.php
Those of you who wish to avert your eyes to possible spoilers:
At Joss's panel in San Diego, he made some announcements that rattled many a Browncoat and Buffy fan in the audience, including the fact that he's in the early stages of working on a Ripper (Giles) series for the BBC, finally spinning a Buffy character into a new project.
YES!
I never thought of having something based off of Giles, but I love him, so this is cool.
I'm not a Faith fan, but I think it would be amazing if she were in the movie with him - I really did love her in season 4 of Angel and if she were the same way (instead of the 2-dimensional character of s7 btvs), I think that would be awesome, if it was post-series or something, plus Eliza is over her not-so-pretty phase and looking gorgeous again.
